We want to inform and connect with the entire Job Path community

Job Path: Back to school edition

One of the ways Job Path works with people in the Community Connection program is through educational support that provides them with the tools they need to pursue higher education goals.

This fall, Rusty H. began his Associates Degree in Modern Languages at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, taking classes in Italian 101 and English 101. He’s already conversational in Spanish, Italian, French, German, Mandarin, and earned his certificate in Arabic from NYU's School of Professional Studies in 2014.

At BMCC, Job Path DSP AnnEliza Canning-Skinner supports him with notetaking and other assistance with organization and time management.

“That helps me be an active listener in class and to participate in class discussions more,” he says. He hopes his degree will help him with his love for travel and experiencing other cultures, and also as he's looking for future work in the clerical field.

“I like reading books about other polyglots and how English borrows words from many other languages,” he says.

For his English class this semester, he wrote a paper on how he taught himself to read at 14 months, including this passage: “As a teenager in high school, reading helped me understand that progress isn’t possible without sacrifice and that sacrifice is the key to any form of success.”

Save the date: Law Rocks jam to benefit JP Nov. 5

What: Law Rocks New York City

When: The band supporting Job Path plays Thurs. Nov. 5. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., show starts at 7 p.m.

Where: The Bowery Ballroom, 6 Delancy Street.

The Law Rocks NYC logo has the skyline and statue of liberty with a bright red background.

We are so grateful that The Meltones, the house band for the global law firm Greenberg Traurig will be raising money for Job Path. A huge thank you to our own DSP Gideon Helf, who is a member of the band, for connecting us! For tickets and more info: https://lawrocks.org/nyc

The Mets didn't win, but we did!

We held our first “JPlay Ball” at The Mets last month, and even though the team did not come out on top, it was still a home run! Thanks to The Mets for donating tickets and for the participants, families, and staff who came out to cheer!

Josh and Rob are in the stands of the ballfield with the playing field behind them.
The JP logo, which looks like a baseball combines with words to read "Play Ball!" on a grassy background.

In attendance were some legacy members of our JP community seen here: Job Path Employment Specialist Robert Sheridan (left) who has been with Job Path since 2011, and Josh W.

As Robert says: “15 years strong together. And Josh let me know today he has 15 years at his job too! The first thing I ever did for Job Path was put together the furniture still in his apartment."

Also seen here are, from L-R, Maria Z., Job Path receptionist Rayquan Ethridge, CEO Carly Teichman, Jonathan W., Terence W., and DSP Jake Shannon.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month and the theme - “Celebrating Value and Talent” - has been at Job Path’s core since our founding almost 50 years ago.

We know that New Yorkers with autism and other developmental disabilities can find jobs and thrive at work, and all this month we’ll be sharing stories that show how an inclusive workplace is a better one. If you know someone who wants to learn more about how to bring Customized Employment to their business or organization, please share this with them!

We appreciate our

Direct Support Professionals all year

Sept. 13 - Sept. 19 was DSP Appreciation week, although it is a sentiment that is always close to heart. We were happy to share some stories about our incredible DSPs in participants' own words including Shawn in our Employment Program, speaking of her DSP Job Coach, Kateryna Korobkina.

“Kat is super supportive of my work, and happy for me and for all the important work I have done at my office. I am still so happy to be with Kat these days, as she is still my new partner at my job site. Kat is supportive and encouraging as I continue to perform all my jobs individually.”
