The History Center on Main Street will host a special presentation on the remarkable life and accomplishments of former Mansfield High School, Mansfield State Normal School and Penn State University football standout F. Joe Bedenk.
The event will be held on Saturday, October 8 in conjunction with Mansfield University’s Homecoming Celebration. It will start at 11:30 am following the Homecoming parade in the upstairs room of the History Center located at 61 North Main Street. The presentation will feature Bedenk’s daughter Joanne Bedenk Warren, who has donated her father’s diplomas and other awards to the History Center. They will be on display at the presentation.
The event is free and opened to the general public.

Bedenk, who passed away in 1978, serve as head coach of the Nittany Lions football and baseball programs and remains to this day the winningest baseball coach in Penn State history.
The presentation, a must for any Penn State and Mansfield fan, will feature his daughter Joanne talking about her father and their life at Penn State. That span takes in more than 40 years of Nittany Lion baseball and football history. It includes the 1949 season when Bedenk served as both head football and baseball coach at PSU. He was last person to serve as head coach for both programs.

Bedenk graduated from Mansfield High School in 1917 before matriculating to Mansfield State Normal School where he was on the football, baseball and basketball teams before graduating in 1919.
At Penn State, Bedenk continued his athletic prowess starring on the football and baseball teams under the direction of legendary head coach Hugo Bezdek. He was a Walter Camp All-American and served as team captain for the Nittany Lions first Rose Bowl team in 1923.
Following graduation, Bedenk was head baseball coach and head assistant football coach under John Heisman at Rice University. He then went to Florida where he served as head baseball and assistant football coach for the Gators before returning to Penn State in 1929.

Bedenk won more that 400 games as a head collegiate coach including a 380-158-3 mark in his 32 seasons as the mentor of the Nittany Lions. Nine of his Penn State teams advanced to the NCAA tournament. including three that reached the College World Series. His 1957 team, undefeated in the regular season, lost 1-0 in extra innings to California in the National Championship game.
Inducted into the America Collegiate Baseball Association Hall of Fame, Bedenk was a Walter Camp Football All-American in 1921 and 1923. During his time at Penn State, Bedenk worked with other Nittany Lion head football coaches Hugo Bezdek, Bob Higgins, Rip Engle and Joe Paterno.

Bert Bates was both photographer and pharmacist. Both his home/office and the pharmacy were on North Main Street. Whether he was in his own office or helping his brother at the pharmacy, if anything unusual was on the street, he could quickly go out and photograph it. Our next issue of Voices includes a pictorial story of odd things seen by Mr. Bates on North Main. Look for it soon. |

History Center's Museum of Us on Main Street features presentation on Joe Bedenk and celebrates 10th year anniversary this month
The History Center on Main Street will host two special events during the month of October.
On Saturday, October 8, starting at 11:30 am in conjunction with Mansfield University’s Homecoming Celebration, The History Center will host a presentation on Joe Bedenk featuring his daughter Joanne Bedenk Warren.
A graduate of Mansfield High School and Mansfield State Normal, Bedenk is still recognized today as one of the most outstanding football players in Nittany Lion history. He later served as both the head baseball and head football coach for Penn State and remains the all-time winningest baseball coach in school history.
Bedenk also served as an assistant football coach in Happy Valley before being promoted to the role as the head football coach in 1949. The presentation will cover his time growing up in Mansfield, his remarkable athletic career and his time at Penn State. It will be moderated by Steve McCloskey.
On Saturday, October 15, The History Center's Museum of Us invites all members, supporters and friends to join us in the celebration of our 10-year anniversary in Mansfield. An open house will be held at the History Center from 2-4 pm. We would be honored to have you join us.

We've been very pleased to see the High School Reunions resume after two years of absence. This year, we hosted several, and we are looking forward to more in 2023. Let us know when your class will be gathering, and we will make sure our doors are open to welcome you back home. If you've been here before, expect to see even more now.

After two long Pandemic years, we hope that the High School reunions can start again. If you are planning a reunion, consider a casual afternoon Meet & Greet at the History Center's Museum of Us. In an informal environment, you can chat with your friends, watch a slide show of Mansfield's historic photos, and find traces of yourself, your friends, and your family. Many of our exhibits are geared to those who grew up here. The Blue & Gold Room is full of MHS sports mementos. The pictorial display includes YOU along with all the other MHS graduates in its first hundred years. |

Update on Our Renovations |
|
Our outside work is very nearly complete: Siding, Stairs, Porch and sidewalks. This 174-year-old building is looking great thanks to Matt Neal and his crew and the community members who chipped in to financially support our upgrades.
Special thanks to Jim Davies and Mary Robinson-Slabey who tore out the old lath and plaster to get the project started. That was the hardest part of the work.
Be sure to visit our new genealogy-history library. Started on the inside in spring 2019, we are completed on the outside in fall 2022.
