Ganim's Obstruction of Transparency Laws Violates the Public Trust... Again
Bridgeport, CT - A scathing article in the CT Post titled, "In Bridgeport, waiting years for public records, while officials break transparency laws" details the years of "stonewalling" public records requests in violation of the Connecticut Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
In response, Bridgeport Mayoral candidate John Gomes stated, "The endless cycle of obstructionism by Mayor Joe Ganim violates the law and further erodes the public trust in city government. The Freedom of Information Act was created to protect the interest of the public and promote transparency in government functions. This piece of legislation was created to protect the community from corrupt elected officials. Unfortunately, when it comes to Bridgeport, the public cannot trust Joe Ganim."
"In late 2015, the position of Director of Accountability and Integrity was established for the very purpose of restoring the public's trust in city government; unfortunately, it turned into another six figure job with benefits to provide the illusion of transparency and accountability."
Gomes continued, "The Open Government, Accountability, Transparency subcommittee of the Transition Task Force identified the current problems of compliance with freedom of information request and issued their recommendations report seven years ago to this day, and nothing has been done."
Gomes concluded, "Seven years, and still no progress on transparency, and the buck stops with Ganim. If Ganim truly wants an open, transparent and accountable government, he should look within and end the culture of stonewalling and secrecy in city hall. This pattern of behavior needs to end and can only be accomplished by a change in leadership.
