Young Adults at John Knox,

Let's get together this fall! Over the next few months, you're invited to join us for a few events where we're doing one thing: getting to know each other. Whether it's around the dinner table or on the trail, my hope for this fall is for young adults at the church to spend time together and to share the gifts of good food and God's creation...and yes, even mind-bending trivia. So, if you're around/under 40 or just starting college, these events are for you. Bring the dog, bring the kids, bring a friend -- see you there!

Grace & peace,

Carter

Middle and high school students had a great (and late) night at the church this past weekend at the first church lock-in in a while! The middle schoolers fueled up with pizza and then had a scavenger hunt that took them all over the church looking for astronauts, murals of Jesus, a King James Version Bible, and more. The high schoolers began to trickle in around 10pm and from there it was manhunt madness around the church (be sure to ask high school students about the best spots to hide upstairs), and we took a quick break for ice cream sundaes at midnight. While sleep was minimal that night, we all had a great time!

Thanks to Susan Felton and Sandra Moore for braving the evening with these students—and to all the parents who brought snacks, drinks, and breakfast to keep us moving!

Grace & peace,

Carter

Seeking Your Support: Guatemala Scholarships

Our annual campaign to support young women in Guatemala is underway!

For several years a focus of our church’s commitment in Guatemala has been a community development initiative directed by Rob and Tara Cahill of Community Cloud Forest Conservation. The WALC Program (Women in Agroecology Leadership for Conservation) invites young women from villages surrounding Cobán to learn sustainable agricultural practices that they can take back to their families and villages. Additional learning includes health and wellness, life skills, and leadership development. In addition to the 25-day on-site training, students receive support for school attendance in the following academic year. In 2022, 167 young women from numerous villages participated in this program.

Please join our effort to equip a generation of female leaders in northern Guatemala through the WALC program (Women in Agroecology Leadership for Conservation). Each gift of $150 supports one student's participation.  You may pay by check to John Knox (memo: Guatemala), or electronically through the John Knox app. Thanks for your generosity!

Side-by-Side Respite Ministry Seeks Director

Those attending the churchwide luncheon on September 10 heard about Side-by-Side, a forthcoming respite care ministry envisioned by John Knox leaders. With the care of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers, this ministry will provide social engagement, stimulating activities, and spiritual fellowship to dependent seniors, offering their family caregivers valuable time to rest and recharge.

We are now welcoming applications for a Director of Respite Ministry to implement and lead this new program, which we hope to open in early 2024. Please share this announcement with anyone who might be interested.

Director of Respite Ministry

Your John Knox Christian Mission and Outreach Committee (CMO) wants to thank you for your generous response to the Lake Forest School Supply Drive and to the Circle of Welcome requests for the Alhussein family who arrived in Greenville in late July. We appreciate your willingness to help!

Another way you can consciously serve our neighbors in need is through contributing items to the Greer Relief Food Pantry (see above the current list of both household and food items that are in short supply). We have collection bins for Greer Relief in the outer Narthex and in the church office or you can use the Amazon Wish List link provided. While the agency welcomes any non-perishable donations, the list above highlights current urgent needs.

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” Matthew 25: 35

Mailbox

Dear Church Family,

I just wanted to reach out and say thank for all your prayers for my grand-nephew, Brooks. He was born with his insides jumbled, kidney issues, and two holes in his heart.

He had his surgery this past Thursday and when the surgeon went in to start repairing, everything was good. He didn't need the extensive surgery and he was going to be in the hospital for a week, and he went home that same day. The surgeon said, "he was good, and we are just going to let God keep doing his miracles on Brooks."

So thank you again for all your prayers. I really appreciate it.
