Today, Virginia’s John-Robert has released his new EP, Where Do You Wanna Go?. A step or two away from the acoustic folk, singer-songwriter music he’s known for, John-Robert is teaching himself to feel things in the moment. After being dropped from his record label and moving home to Virginia from LA, he made the conscious choice to pursue his realtime tastes and interests. Despite creating this music in a period of change, John-Robert has a very clear image of himself — Stream.

On the title of the EP, John-Robert shared, “It’s the question I asked myself when I moved back home. Where do I go musically and professionally from here? Where do I wanna be? It felt appropriate.”

Tracking the songs in his bedroom and recording with Ronnie DiSimone (Daisy the Great, Del Water Gap) in New York, the EP features Zac Coe on drums and Zoe Zeeman on bass. Embracing a new era of confidence, there’s a ribbon of romantic tension that weaves from song to song on the EP.

Opening with a jazzy, sultry title track, fans of John-Robert are immediately thrown a sonic curveball. Discussing the track, he shared:

“I moved back to Virginia and had developed a crush on someone I’ve known since I was 18. The saxophone was recorded by Ognjen ‘Ogi’ Gotovcevic in his bedroom during a trip to LA. The intro was inspired by an Isley Brothers song called ‘Choosey Lover.’ A solo like that at the top of the song is bold and sets the tone.”

Up next is the bouncy and cheeky “Did It Just Because,” a track that flips the script on what is typically expected out of a song about cheating. Halfway through, the EP’s most gentle moment can be found in “Tethered.” Track number 4, “Anna,” is a love song full of tender, confident anticipation. Closing track “Low Roller” lives in the Appalachia-forged, West Coast-shaped songwriting John-Robert has become known for. It is a biographical account of where he is right now, scuffs and all.

Illustrating this era with a series of sophisticated live performance videos, John-Robert today releases a new clip for the EP’s title track. The three recent videos were directed by Jacob Butler (La Lom) and styled by Jon Alan for Buck Mason, with John-Robert backed by brothers Devin and Cameron Thistle of the band Saburnia. Today’s video also sees them joined by Ogi Gotovcevic on saxophone — Watch.

Earlier this month, John-Robert supported Buffalo Traffic Jam across three sold-out shows in Colorado. In May and August he will embark on a headline tour of his own. Also in August, he will be on the lineup of Seattle’s Capitol Hill Block Party. See all upcoming tour dates here and below.

MELODIC MAGAZINE “Filled with romantic tension, ‘Anna’ is a warm yet moody confession of love.”

GLAMGLARE “Built on a great rhythmic pull, a touch of funk, and a bit of speak-singing, it keeps things light on its feet while never losing sight of the sting underneath. The restrained production suits it beautifully, giving the hook even more room to settle in.”

ABOUT JOHN-ROBERT:

John-Robert has been a notable performer since he was a child, it is simply what he was born to do. At only 13 years old, John-Robert was handpicked to perform on the Ellen show as a musical child prodigy. At 19, he left his hometown Edinburg, VA (pop. 1,070) in 2019 to move to LA and start his music career, bypassing a scholarship to Berklee. He was signed to Nice Life/Warner by Grammy-nominated producer Ricky Reed (Leon Bridges, Lizzo) and released a handful of singles and EPs over a few years, earning him co-signs from artists Alessia Cara and Camilla Cabello. But it was a live fireside performance of his 2023 song “Come Pick Me Up” that catapulted John-Robert’s lilting blend of traditional folk and Appalachian country into the modern pop landscape. He toured extensively in 2023 and 2024 in the US and abroad supporting artists like Madi Diaz, Rayland Baxter, Leon Bridges, and even Liam Gallagher.

Virginia, and his family there, has always been a source of inspiration for the singer-songwriter. On making his 2023 EP Garden Snake he says, “It was like trying to make a Virginia record in LA.” A move back home to Virginia in early 2025 made perfect sense as he embarked on creating a new body of work. The move was a way to pull himself out of the professional and personal turmoil of LA, and reconnect with the people and places that made him who he is today – the banks of the North Fork Shenandoah River and rolling hillsides, the home-cooked meals and close-knit community. Newly independent, he released his EP Cross Stitch in 2025. He has spent the last few months on the road with JOSEPH, Ax and the Hatchetmen, Infinity Song and more. And this year, he has already released his new EP Where Do You Wanna Go? and announced new tour dates.
