"Love, death, cinema - they're all there in Mia Madre bumping up
against one another beautifully. - Manohla Dargis, New York Times

JOHN TURTURRO STARS IN THE EXCLUSIVE MIAMI PREMIERE
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 2 THRU THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8

In the touching new film by Italian master Nanni Moretti, a harried filmmaker tries to juggle the production of her new film with visits to the bedside of her dying mother. If most films dealing with aging and death are somber and melancholic, Mia Madre adds large doses of glorious, anarchic comedy. The film's story has a clear autobiographical bent: Moretti lost his own mother during the shooting of We Have A Pope, his previous film. But he gives the filmmaker's role not to himself, but to his charismatic muse, Margherita Buy. He steps into a secondary role as the brother / son who does most of the caregiving while his sister runs between the film set and hospital, trying frantically to be both a consummate professional and a dutiful daughter. What also elevates this film into a gentle kind of feminist manifesto is not just Buy's character, but also that of the mother (Giulia Lazzarini), a teacher of classical literature. Moretti displaces himself further by giving the major male part to John Turturro, who plays the brash, outsized American star of the film-within-a-film with great comic flourish. Winner of the coveted Ecumenical Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, Mia Madre finds Moretti at the top of his game. A comedy-drama inflected with a quiet sense of grief, it's a work that revels in human imperfections - in people who simply can't stop being who they are: selfish and spoilt, yet still very endearing. Moretti celebrates both the best and worst in all of us.

After Hours

The Bride (Uma Thurman) is out for bloody vengeance in Quentin Tarantino's action-packed homage to the Shaw Brother, spaghetti westerns and all kinds of grindhouse cinema. On the day of her wedding, the Bride is attacked by her old flame Bill (David Carradine, in a role completely opposite from that of Kung Fu) and his Deadly Viper Assassination Squad (devilishly portrayed by Lucy Liu, Daryl Hannah, Vivica A. Fox, and Michael Madsen). The guests are all torn to shreds and the Bride herself is shot point blank in the head - while pregnant with Bill's child. Five years later, the Bride wakes up from a coma with only one thing on her mind: killing everyone. The concept for Kill Bill was conceived on the set of Pulp Fiction between Thurman and Tarantino; the film's story credit goes to "Q & U." And let's not forget that killer soundtrack that'll slice your neck, produced by another lover of all things martial arts: the RZA. Cue Ironside theme.
After Hours tickets are $7 and include a free popcorn and 2-for-1 beer and wine.

50TH ANNIVERSARY (35MM)
Friday, 9/6 at 9:00 pm

How time flies! We're celebrating Blow-Up's 50th anniversary - in 35mm, no less - and it seems like only yesterday that we watched Michelangelo Antonioni's most popular film (and his first in English) for the first time. It's a day in the life of a fashion photographer (David Hemmings) who discovers, after blowing up his photos of a couple in the park, that he may he inadvertently uncovered a murder. Part erotic thriller, part exotic travelogue. Few films of the time have been as influential. It played a substantial role in putting "swinging London" on the map. It inspired both Coppola's The Conversation and De Palma's Blow Out. It was a critical hit in its own time, winning the coveted Grand Prix at Cannes and earning two Oscar nominations (Best Director and Best Original Screenplay). Arthur Knight called it "as important and germinal a film as Citizen Kane, Open City, and Hiroshima Mon Amour - perhaps even more so." Andrew Sarris called it "a mod masterpiece." The Swedish master was right: This is a great film that warrants repeated viewings.
Tickets for for this special one-time only screening are $11.75 general admission ($8 for members). Check out more upcoming special screenings here.
Friday, 9/9 thru Thursday, 9/15

A young Mayan woman finds herself at the crossroads between the ancient and the modern worlds in Ixcanul, a transporting, hypnotically beautiful debut feature from Guatemalan director Jayro Bustamante. María lives and works with her parents on a coffee plantation in the foothills of an active volcano in Guatemala. She's been promised in marriage to the plantation overseer, but is not about to acquiesce to her parents' design. María sees in Pepe, a young coffee cutter planning to migrate to the US, the possibility of a brighter future. A simple, fable-like movie made in close collaboration with a real Mayan farming community from the Guatemalan highlands, Bustamante's film is downright Herzogian in its surfeit of physical detail, observed rituals and looming clash of civilizations. Ixcanul is one of the most lauded films to come out of Latin America in 2015. It won Best Film and Best Director in Guadalajara, Best Film in Cartagena, the coveted Silver Bear in Berlin, Best First Film and Audience Award at the Platino Iberoamerican Awards. Director Bustamante knocks it out of the park in his first time at bat, a fact made all the more remarkable, hailing from a country with a nascent film industry. However you look at it, take note, Ixcanul is one of the must-see films of the year.

FROM UP ON POPPY HILL
Sat. 9/10 & Sun. 9/11 at 11:00 AM

The Studio Ghibli legacy continues with Gorō Miyazaki (son of Hayao Miyazaki) directing the charming film, From Up on Poppy Hill. Written by Hayao and Keiko Niwa (When Marnie Was There), the 2011 anime dives into the post Korean War life with our two young high school protagonists, Umi and Shun. When Shun offers a ride to Umi on his bicycle, the two become an inseparable pair who fight for their clubhouse from Tokumaru, a business man who desires to demolish buildings for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. As the pair become close, they realize their bond might be closer than they anticipated, both holding the same photograph of their fathers during the war. From Up on Poppy Hill is a heartfelt tale that gradually shifts from the journey of childhood dreams to the real world. An example to all what it means to have dedication and perseverance. The English dubbed-version was released in 2013. The impressive voice cast includes Jamie Lee Curtis, Gillian Anderson, Ron Howard, and Aubrey Plaza. The film received positive reviews during its initial release, making it yet another beloved Studio Ghibli classic. The Rotten Tomatoes consensus: "Gentle and nostalgic, From Up on Poppy Hill is one of Studio Ghibli's sweeter efforts." This film is suitable for ages 9 and up and will be voice dubbed in English.

After Hours

Woody Allen's signature film, Annie Hall is a romantic comedy that highlights the nerve racking "club" of dating. We jump into Alvy Singer's (Woody Allen) life as he reflects on his most significant life events such as schooling and family. The main focus of his reflection derives from Singer's most significant relationship, Annie Hall (Diane Keaton), a stylish nightclub singer and his most recent ex. These events become a comedic neurosis when Alvy reviews the events and memories of his relationship with Annie and why it ultimately failed. Annie Hall also features a slew known actors/celebrities including: Paul Simon, Shelley Duvall and Christopher Walken. Allen's Jewish-oppressed, therapy-warranted stream-of-conscious saw multiple wins including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress in a Lead Role.

Thursday, 9/15 thru Thursday, 9/22

In addition to new interviews with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr as well as a host of names with direct experience of the times - Whoopi Goldberg, Elvis Costello, Larry Kane, Dr. Kitty Oliver among others, the film also includes 12 full and partial performances from the concerts in 4K picture restoration and digitally remastered 5.1 surround sound. The band you know. The story you don't.

A 30-minute concert of the Beatles' performance from Shea Stadium 1965 is an in-theater exclusive bonus.

 DEKALOG
Friday, 9/16 thru Thursday, 9/22

This masterwork by Krzysztof Kieślowski is one of the twentieth century's greatest achievements in visual storytelling. Originally made for Polish television, Dekalog focuses on the residents of a housing complex in late-Communist Poland, whose lives become subtly intertwined as they face emotional dilemmas that are at once deeply personal and universally human. Its ten hour-long films screen in pairs once during the course of a week and draw from the Ten Commandments for thematic inspiration and an overarching structure, grappling deftly with complex moral and existential questions that concern life, death, love, hate, truth, and the passage of time. Shot by nine different cinematographers, with stirring music by Zbigniew Preisner and compelling performances from established and unknown actors alike, Dekalog arrestingly explores the unknowable forces that shape our lives. The longer theatrical versions of the series' fifth and sixth films, A Short Film About Killing and A Short Film About Love, will screen on 9/21 and 9/22, respectively.

Note: All films are self-contained, can be appreciated on their own, and need not be watched in sequential order. A $50 series pass will admit you to every program.

The Vesper Project
Explores Identity, Memories, and Race at the Lowe
September 8 - December 23, 2016

The Vesper Project is the culmination of New York City-based Titus Kaphar's intensive engagement with the fictional history of the Vespers, a 19th-century New England family who were able to "pass" as Caucasian. The installation features the remains of an abandoned Connecticut home; through slashing, silhouetting, and whitewashing, Kaphar creates a complex map that compresses time and elides personal histories. An interactive dance performance around the installation will take place on October 15, 6:00 pm, by the Peter London Global Dance Company.

Tickets can be purchased in advance online at www.lowemuseum.org or by calling the Lowe Art Museum at 305-284-5587.
