NEW: JCDHE director provides update on COVID-19 and vaccines
On Tuesday, March 23, Johnson County Department of Health and Environment Director Dr. Sanmi Areola provided a written update on COVID-19 and vaccines to the Board of County Commissioners.

Highlights from the update include:
  • Vaccine priorities this week include those 65+, K-12, child care staff, first responders, health care workers, long-term care residents and staff, vulnerable populations, high-contact workers and those 16-64 with medical conditions.
  • All Johnson County residents and workers in any phase can now complete the vaccine interest survey.
  • The new Lenexa vaccine clinic is up and running. Learn more further below in this e-newsletter.
  • There were 222 new infections last week, That's down from 232 the week prior. This translates into an average of 32 new infections per day.
  • When calculated as a rate, we're at 37 cases per 100,000 residents per week.
  • The primary measure/criteria for schools is incidence rate. Our recommended phase for school gating criteria is the Yellow Zone.
  • COVID-19 testing remains available on JCDHE and state-sponsored sites through gogettested.com.

As of March 23, Johnson County has:
43,991 positive cases of COVID-19 (increase of 29 since yesterday)
2.8% percent positive, 14-day average
78 incidence rate, number of new cases/100K persons, over prior 14 days, (no change since yesterday)
638 deaths (no additional deaths since yesterday)
236,105 individuals tested negative (increase of 355 since yesterday)
42,253 presumed recovered (increase of 29 since yesterday)
Positive cases represent those reported to the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment by physicians, private laboratories, hospitals and the Kansas Department of Health and Environmental Laboratories. Presumed Recovered are surviving individuals not hospitalized and more than 30 days since symptom onset. These numbers are not representative of the total number of individuals with COVID-19 in Johnson County. All data is provisional and subject to change.

UPDATE: University of Kansas Health System provides regional update
The University of Kansas Health System provides daily updates on how COVID-19 is impacting our health care system and community.

On the Tuesday, March 23 episode, Kansas Department of Health and Environment Secretary Lee Norman, M.D., talked about the progress of the overall COVID-19 vaccine rollout, including combining Phases 3 and 4. The experts also discussed the virus infection rate across the state.
