Mitch Landrieu Special Guest at APTA Legislative Conference
_2452096.jpg) The Honorable Mitchell J. Landrieu, senior advisor to the President and infrastructure implementation coordinator, The White House, is the featured speaker at a special March 13 Luncheon Conversation during the upcoming APTA Legislative Conference March 12-14 in Washington, DC.
Landrieu served as the 61st Mayor of New Orleans from 2010–2018. When he took office, the city was still recovering from Hurricane Katrina and in the midst of the BP oil spill. Under his leadership, New Orleans is widely recognized as one of the great comeback stories in the U.S. In 2015, Landrieu was named “Public Official of the Year” by Governing, and in 2016 was voted “America’s Top Turnaround Mayor” in a Politico survey of mayors. He also served as president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
Landrieu joins fellow guest speakers USDOT Deputy Secretary Polly Trottenberg, FTA Administrator Nuria Fernandez and more. Immediately following the conference, APTA’s High-Speed Rail Seminar will explore the questions that need to be addressed to build a robust high-speed and intercity passenger rail network in the U.S. Seminar guest speakers include FRA Administrator Amit Bose; Deputy Administrator Jennifer Mitchell; Jennifer DeBruhl, director, Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation; and more.

COMMENTARY
For Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Partnerships and Conversation Are Critical
I hope that each of you has had the opportunity to take a moment during Black History Month to reflect upon and learn more about the experiences of black people in America and their profound impact on our country. At the root of Black American history is the horrific kidnapping and enslavement of Africans that were brought to this country’s shores, followed by the many unspeakable hardships endured by their descendants. The legacy of Black America, however, is also one of great progress, made possible by hard-working, committed people who fought to pursue their own American dream. It’s important for us to shine a light on the many victories of the civil rights movement, which have allowed for new possibilities, successes and achievements for Black people across the country—a fight that continues today. Black Americans have a long history of making positive impacts on public transportation issues. In fact, for most of us, our introduction to transit equity began with discussions about Rosa Parks’ refusal to move to the back of a Montgomery bus and what that act meant to the larger civil rights movement.

| | | A Tribute to African American Public Transportation Industry Leaders
In acknowledging Black History Month, we recognize the many African Americans who made significant contributions to the public transportation industry. Through their individual and collective achievements, they helped pave the way for other persons of color to rise to leadership positions. African Americans have had a profound impact upon the U.S. public transportation industry since its initiation, not only in terms of ridership and driving buses and operating trains, but increasingly in transit managerial capacities.
