Conversation: Loneliness and Annihilation Anxiety in the Therapy Room

This conversation will view fears of being alone, overwhelmed, merged, penetrated, fragmented, and destroyed; elevated by world events. The study of annihilation anxieties is important for understanding traumatic anxiety and including difficult resistances in the treatment.

Course Objectives:
1.    Learn theoretical and clinical aspects of fears about loneliness, safety, survival, and self-preservation.
2.    Identify six sub-dimensions of annihilation anxiety: Fear of death, being overwhelmed, falling apart, disappearing, emptiness, nothingness, abandonment, persecution, and catastrophe.
3.    Examine complicity of countertransference reactions during analyses of fear of loneliness.
4.    Gain the ability to identify and treat anxieties related to fear of loneliness and annihilation.
