Conversation: Secrets, the importance of having them, and their impact on our character.
“Everyone has secrets, we just haven’t gotten to yours yet” – James Bond
The ability to have a secret implies a sense of inner versus outer space, an established boundary between self and other. The more important a secret is, the greater the energy charge it requires and the stronger its push to re-emerge. People who share secrets truly share an identity. Secrets are thus used to join with or separate from other people. This discussion will look at the role secrets play in treatment with the therapist and in the patient’s life.
Course Objectives:
1. Participants will gain an understanding of secrecy.
2. Participants will explore how secrets may elicit feelings of guilt.
3. Participants will be able to utilize secrets in therapy as a gateway to unconscious fantasies.
