The concept of transference is an important tool for identifying past patterns of behavior that resurface in the present. The unconscious can use transference in a defensive manner. By interacting with a new person as if they were a past figure, the unconscious attempts to resolve, repeat, or protect itself from unresolved emotional experiences. The different types of transference, such as positive, negative, erotic, etc., will be examined through a psychoanalytic lens.
Course Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to define the basic concept of transference.
2. Participants will learn how working with the transference facilitates change by helping clients to differentiate past relationship experiences from current ones.
3. Participants will be able to examine their own countertransference and use it effectively in the analytic session to benefit the client.
