I look forward to seeing you on Thursday. Kids very welcome, and everyone should grab a snowball and some food.
I'll be giving some thoughts on the upcoming session, and my colleague Rep. Matt Willard (Gentilly) will do a Q&A on insurance issues. The fortified roof program is proving to significantly lower insurance prices, on average 22%, or over $1000 a year.
Congratulations to everyone around the state who worked hard to defeat the four amendments on our ballots last week. Democrat, Republican, Black, White, North, South - voters across the state said no to all four. Voters thought that too much was happening, too soon, it was confusing, #2 was very long, and some of the issues were not what they appeared to be (teacher pay raise). I hope that we will do better this session. Coverage here, here, here.
I have some interesting bills this session. Here's a teaser: taxing the 1% to give teachers a nice big raise (seriously!), making sure that kids in the Education Scam Accounts program are actually being educated, increasing affordable housing in New Orleans, maybe doing some good with S&WB, increasing taxes on cigarettes (which will directly improve health outcomes!), fixing our victim notification system once and for all, and a few others. I'll be busy!
