Independent Long-Term Care Councils Association of British Columbia
(ILTCCABC)

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Today, I want to share something that matters deeply to all of us at ILTCCABC and to the thousands of residents and families we represent who have already had to leave their homes for long-term care; some of them far too early or unnecessarily.

For years, families have told us the same thing: people want to remain in their homes and communities for as long as possible. They want to stay connected to their loved ones, maintain their independence, and avoid unnecessary moves into higher levels of care whenever possible.

Yet too many seniors in British Columbia face barriers to accessing the home support services they need. As a result, families and friends are often left struggling to fill the gaps, hospitals face increasing pressure, and many seniors are forced to consider long-term care earlier than necessary.

That is why ILTCCABC is proud to be part of the newly launched Healthcare Needs Home Care movement.

On June 2, a coalition of province-wide organizations came together to launch this important initiative. Together, we are advocating for a simple but transformative policy solution: free access to home support services for all who need it.

This is not only about improving the quality of life. It is about strengthening the entire continuum of care.

When seniors receive the support they need at home:

• They can remain independent longer.

• Family caregivers receive much-needed support.

• Hospital admissions can be reduced.

• Pressure on long-term care waitlists can be eased.

• Health-care budgets can be used more effectively.

As an organization dedicated to supporting Family Councils in long-term care, ILTCCABC understands the challenges families face when appropriate support is unavailable earlier in a person's care journey. Home support is a critical part of the solution.

We are honoured to stand alongside our coalition partners:

The Health Care Needs Home Care campaign aims to eliminate income-tested co-payments, which create barriers for seniors to access home support to a point where their only option is to enter publicly-subsidized long-term care.

Real change happens when communities come together and speak with a united voice. We believe every senior deserves access to the support they need to live safely and with dignity, and every family deserves a system that works better for everyone.

Thank you for your continued support of ILTCCABC and for helping us advocate for a stronger, more compassionate health-care system for all British Columbians.
