2.The True Costs of the US Transportation System

Date: Tuesday, May 26

Time: 2:00–3:00 p.m. ET / 11:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. PT

Speakers:

For decades, the surface transportation reauthorization (STR) has funded highway expansion projects that have disproportionately divided and polluted communities of color.

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) invites you to a virtual event featuring clean transportation experts as they discuss nuances in how transportation, including federal roads, bridges, rail, and mass transit, is funded in the United States.

3.Sign on to AB 1448 Support (to combat Trump offshore drilling off CA)

SIGN ON AB 1448 – a fantastic piece of state legislation that would: prohibit existing leases and oil and gas-related infrastructure in state waters from being used to support Trump’s proposed Pacific federal leases and future leases past 2026. The Bill would also require the State Lands Commission to consider additional environmental and safety factors before renewing leases or allowing lease transfers for oil and gas infrastructure in state waters. It would also tighten a gap in the state’s current ban on offshore drilling in state waters.
This bill is THE legislative antidote to the Trump drilling plan for California, and we need all hands on deck to get it passed. For those unfamiliar, the most recent Trump plans currently include leasing the entire California coast for new offshore drilling.
Please sign HERE to join the group letter by Wednesday, May 27th at Noon PT.

NOTE: Even if you have signed in support of last year’s version of AB 1448, we need you to sign on again because the bill language has changed. The first iteration of the letter will go to Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee. Future iterations will be opt-out so you will only need to let us know if you wish to drop off.

4.  Don't auction off the Arctic

The Trump administration is continuing its all-out assault on public lands by auctioning off the Arctic for oil and gas drilling. We need to show Congress that the public supports permanent protections for the Arctic. Fossil fuel companies are now bidding on which plots to plunder. This follows an auction of 1.3 million acres of ecologically sensitive public lands in the Western Arctic in March. This administration is already planning future lease sales like these in both Arctic areas. Send a letter to Congress urging them to permanently protect the Arctic from oil and gas drilling.

TAKE ACTION

5.Climate Action California is excited to announce our endorsement of State Senator BEN ALLEN FOR INSURANCE COMMISSIONER.

Senator Allen, a longtime friend and ally of Climate Action California, has been a bold and highly consequential legislator for the last 12 years—and it's a gift to California that he is willing to turn his strategic mind to Insurance, surely one of the toughest jobs in the state. Read our press release. For much more, read Ben Allen's campaign website, which closely examines California's insurance dilemmas and lays out his plans for addressing them in the context of global heating and the fossil fuel industry's chokehold on federal policy.

We're enthusiastically endorsing TOM STEYER FOR GOVERNOR OF CALIFORNIA. Read our press release.

In the East Bay, we're happy to endorse Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, representing Assembly District 16, Eastern Alameda and Contra Costa Counties.

For the open state Senate seat (Senate District 10) including Hayward, Milpitas, Sunnyvale and Santa Clara, two excellent candidates have earned our dual endorsement—among the six who will be on the Primary ballot:

Keep up the good work!

Shirley, Sheilah, Brodie,  Howard, Joan F, Lawrence, Ogie, Cedric, Aydin, Errol and Alex

Please join us. Volunteers are always needed.
