HELPING CHILDREN OF UKRAINE THIS SUMMER

Dear Healing of Wounds of the War in Ukraine Fund supporters,

The war in Ukraine has taken a devastating toll on children, causing wounds to their physical and mental health, disrupting their development and well-being. We approach the International Children's Day celebrated on June 1 – a day dedicated to supporting all children around the world. Children and youth in Ukraine need our prayers and support!

For most children in Ukraine, especially those living in eastern Ukraine, their lives were marked by bombardment, violence, and displacement. More than 2,520 children have been killed or injured since February 2022 (numbers verified by the UN), even though the true number is likely higher. Russia has forcefully transferred over 35,000 Ukrainian children (Yale’s Humanitarian Research Lab Data) to Russia to wipe the children’s memories, identity, including their families, nationality, and life before the occupation. Over 5.1 million children have been displaced from their homes and 1 in 3 children has witnessed someone being killed or injured (Unicef report).

School-aged children in Ukraine face many challenges such as lack of interaction with their peers, learning deficiency and mental health challenges. Over 3,500 school and university buildings are ruined or left inoperable in Ukraine. Children’s access to education and proper healthcare have been severely affected. Children in the eastern parts of Ukraine have been learning online since the full-scale invasion, meeting briefly in-person only a few times a year in a limited number of shelters with their teachers and peers to receive their assignments. Mental health challenges in children and teenagers such as depression, panic attacks, sadness, loneliness, development of addictions are exacerbated by isolation, lack of connectivity, constant stress and missing out on valuable social engagement opportunities and proper support.

40% of preschool-age children are missing out on early education, impacting brain development and future learning capacity.

Half of school-age refugee children from Ukraine are not enrolled in national education systems in their host countries, putting them at risk of further isolation from peers.

Nearly 40% of school-age children now study only online or through a mix of remote and in-person learning, with an average learning loss of two years in reading and one year in math.

The Healing of Wounds of the War in Ukraine Fund makes it a priority to help and protect and support children in this challenging time of the war in Ukraine. Our programs and initiatives help to support rehabilitation summer camps for mental and spiritual healing for children from eastern Ukraine affected by constant Russian bombings, and mental rehabilitation programs for families affected by the war. The Fund supported 32 rehabilitation centers and mental health programs and 8 summer rehabilitation camps for children affected by the war in Ukraine.

It costs $30 per day ($420 per two-week camp) to help one child to receive loving care from mental health specialists, counselors, clergy in a summer rehabilitation camp in the Carpathian mountains run by our trusted partners in Ukraine.

OUR GOAL is to raise $210,000 to help 500 children to heal during their stay at these summer rehabilitation camps.
