Water Landscape History

with Larry Rich, Office of Sustainability, City of Long Beach

As part of our limited-time Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition, Water/Ways, we have invited Larry Rich to speak about the landscape history of Long Beach, including the original locations of the rivers, creeks, springs, and wetlands that once graced vast areas of the city. This fascinating talk includes a live demonstration of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, along with a collection of historic maps, comparing and contrasting past landscapes with our current urbanized setting. A graduate of CSULB and 30-year City employee, Larry enjoys sharing his specialized information about the interplay of local history and geography with others.
