From President Frank H. Wu:
I am proud to announce that Queens College’s annual celebration of the life of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King will take place on Sunday, January 19 at 3 pm in Colden Auditorium. This year’s event has been themed “We Have and Shall Overcome.” We thank our event sponsors, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, Jr. and Kupferberg Center for the Arts.
The celebration will feature a keynote speech by Arva Rice, president and chief executive officer of the New York Urban League, who will also be presented with the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award. During her illustrious career in community and public service, Arva has provided outstanding leadership in advocating for equality of opportunity and social justice and has shown an enduring commitment to education and higher education. Her work reflects the values and ideals promulgated by Dr. King.
Following the keynote and award presentation will be a special performance by the Branford Marsalis Quartet. A National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Jazz Master and three-time Grammy Award-winning saxophonist, Branford Marsalis is one of the most revered figures in jazz and contemporary music. Marsalis presents a kaleidoscopic range of original compositions, along with jazz and popular classics, all supercharged by his quartet’s extraordinary energy and telepathic musical connection.
We are also excited to present the premiere of the latest episode in QC's original docuseries on the QC/Dr. King legacy connection.
Special thanks to the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Planning Committee, chaired by Chief Diversity Officer & Dean of Diversity Jerima DeWese and Professor Christopher Williams (English).
