The Process Of New Product Formulation
Is it wrong to be obsessed with formulations? If so – call me guilty! I recently made two new unique formulations: Kalahari Melon Face Cream and Mango and Blackcurrant Sensual Lip Shimmer. These products' luxurious ingredients are on the product pages of my website. In this article, I want to explain what goes into formulating a new product.
I usually begin the process of new product formulation by focusing on what I need. I call this 'my intention.' For example, in formulating the Kalahari Melon Face Cream, I wanted a face cream that would absorb well, leave my face feeling hydrated, and help diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Next, I select what I consider the star ingredients. In the Kalahari Melon Face Cream, it is the oils: Kalahari Melon Citrullus lanatus and Red Raspberry Rubus Idaeus seed oils.
After I select the star ingredients and know my intended use, I can add other ingredients, such as water, emollients, and essential oils. I use the manufacturer's recommended percentage and formulation guidelines for the emollients and preservatives. Most of the manufacturers I purchase raw materials from provide a great deal of information and often have examples of using a particular ingredient in a formulation. This information allows me to get an idea of how much they use for specific products. I build a new formulation in a 50-100 gram batch. This way, the percentages are easier to figure out. I also only have a little product to either use or dispose of if it turns out differently than I expected. For instance, some emollients thicken over time, and I don't know if it has the consistency I desire for a few days. This slow thickening process happened the first few times I made the Dreamy Body Butter. I made at least four batches before I got the consistency to where I felt it could be called body butter.
The water I use is often in the form of a hydrosol. I use 100% hydrosols in my Dreamy Body Butter but only about a third in my Kalahari Melon Face Cream. Since the face is a more sensitive area than other areas of the body, I wanted to use more distilled water than hydrosol. In some formulations, I don't use any water. When not using water, I can skip the preservative and use an antioxidant such as Vitamin E or Phytocode Elderberry. Any formulation containing water requires a boil period and a broad-spectrum preservative. It is like Benjamin Franklin was purported to say, “In wine there is wisdom, in beer there is freedom, in water there is bacteria." I have tried using different preservatives that are less powerful and had the formulations go bad after a few months. So now, I stick with a broad-spectrum preservative, paraben, and formaldehyde free, whenever I have water in a formulation.

Why wild caught isn’t necessarily better.
The truth about farmed & commercial wild-caught seafood.
Seatopia’s low-density clean-water aquaculture farms average 2% fish to 98% water density. Raised on a diet rich in micro-algae, Seatopia seafood is healthy, stress-free, and rich in essential Omega-3s: EPA, & DHA. Every Seatopia farm is third-party certified for sustainable and fair trade practices, providing blue-tech jobs for their communities.
Protecting key spawning, breeding, and migratory habitats have proven to regenerate biomass and biodiversity.
- Legal overfishing and climate change are causing wild fish stocks to collapse faster than they can regenerate.
- FDA Recommends Pregnant Women Should Avoid Eating Tuna & Swordfish Due to Mercury Toxicity
- UC Davis Study Found Toxic Microplastics in 25% of Wild Caught Seafood.

Can Hearing Aids Affect Your Brain?
Negative changes can occur in the brain, and as a result, even after you put on hearing aids, processing sounds can be a challenge. If you let your hearing loss go untreated for too long, the auditory parts of the brain may be reassigned to other functions.
Not wearing your hearing aids is not as simple as just not being able to hear. People who use hearing aids for age-related hearing problems (age-related hearing loss) maintain better brain function over time than people who don't use them.
Hearing Loss May Put You at Risk for Depression, Cognitive Impairment, Isolation, and Anxiety.
In fact, one study documented hearing loss and cognitive impairment in a group of nearly 4,000 volunteers over a 25-year period. What the researchers found was interesting: people with hearing loss who did not wear hearing aids had a higher risk of developing dementia and depression. However, people with hearing loss who did use hearing aids experienced cognitive decline at a similar rate as people without hearing loss. Click here for full article.

one pan chicken and veggies with bacon
|
|
RECIPE TIPS
- the chopped veggies… going seasonal with brussels sprouts and butternut squash (to save time, you can always buy pre-chopped/cubed veggies or chop them on the weekend)
-
chopped protein (literally just go nuts on some chicken breast and bacon right out of the package (or sub for turkey bacon)
- a hot cast iron pan… ah yes, the other MVP, however, any skillet will do, but this provides extra flavor and is a healthier option
- to make it extra nutrient-dense, you are welcome to use a little bone broth as a cooking liquid, omit, or use water. It just helps the veggies get softer if you’d like!
