NSU Law and The Recording Academy
® Florida Chapter will present a CLE program focusing on several musical artist rights issues that are currently in legislative development.
This program provides an interdisciplinary review of important legal issues for artists in the business of music today.
This panel discussion will be moderated by Kenneth Abdo, an attorney and private practice artist advocate who sits on The Recording Academy Board of Trustees. Panelists include Todd Dupler, an attorney and Director of Government Relations for The Recording Academy in Washington D.C.; an artist from The Recording Academy's Florida Chapter; and a representative from a member of Florida's congressional delegation. An informal discussion of the issues over cocktails and light dinner will follow.

NSU Kicks Off Black History Month Celebration with 13th Annual African Presence Art Exhibit
This year's exhibition is "ASCENT" Black Women's Expressions," featuring the work of women of African descent from the local, national, and international art scene. The exhibit runs through March 4 in the Don Taft University Center. Other Black History Month events are scheduled throughout the month through March 3. This tournament offers first year law students experience in making trial closing arguments using a case file. NSU Law Hosts
ABA Cyberspace Law Winter Working Meeting
On January 29 and 30, 2016, the American Bar Association's Cyberspace Law Committee held its annual
Winter Working Meeting at NSU College of Law at Nova Southeastern University. Attorneys and Professors from Europe, Canada and the United States spent a day and a half discussing a broad range of topics related to cyberspace, cybersecurity, and federal and international law related to internet technology. NSU Law Dean Jon Garon presented a Cyberspace Year in Review CLE at the Friday luncheon. Seminar attendees enjoyed a reception Friday evening and NSU Law students enjoyed complimentary admission to the meeting.

NSU Law Center Plus January 22 "The Balancing Act" Managing Work and Life in a 24/7/365 World"
Professor Leslie Cooney, NSU Associate Professor of Psychology Dr. Jaime Tarter, Sarahnell Murphy (JD 1995) and Stephen Mellor (JD 2006) presented a discussion on how to balance life while maintain a busy law practice. Dr. Tartar explained the effect stress has on the brain and gave suggestions on how to deal with it. Ms. Murphy, a busy Assistant State Attorney, spoke about maintaining competence while managing a heavy caseload and supervising young lawyers without sacrificing family and friends, and Mr. Mellor spoke about an attorney's duty to be diligent while managing clients, and shared his "work hard-play hard" philosophy.

"The new global dis/order in central banking and public finance," published by Edward Elgar Publications in a volume entitled Research Handbook on Political Economy and Law (2015, John D. Haskell and Ugo Mattei, eds.)
Adjunct Professor and Veterans Law Clinic Director Jayme Cassidy
is directing the new NSU Law Legal Incubator Program. This program will serve Veterans and low-to-moderate income people while also offering new attorneys the infrastructure and training needed to get their law practice started. For more information, visit the Incubator webpage.

Professor Kathy Cerminara published her annual supplement to the book she co-authored, The Right to Die: The Law of End-of-Life Decisionmaking (Aspen Publishers, 3d ed).
Professor Michael Dale co-authored
"In Re Lewis" for National Institute for Trial Advocacy's case file, published by LexisNexis. The case is NITA's first juvenile delinquency case file. He co-authored an op-ed piece in the Sun Sentinel, "The Dark Hole That is the Broward Dependency Court."
Professor Joel Mintz was a commentator at the 2016 Association of American Law Schools (AALS) annual meeting, in a session on "How to Involve Students in Real World Problems," co-sponsored by the AALS Environmental Law, Natural Resources Law, and Agriculture and Food Law Sections. His 2015 update to his treatise, State and Local Government Environmental Liability, was published by Thomson Reuters/West Publishing Company.
Frank Orlando, a former Circuit Judge in Broward County, is the Director of the Center for the Study of Youth Policy at NSU Law. He was featured in "This Week in South Florida" on January 3, 2016. Orlando spoke on a panel concerning juvenile rights. View it online.

and Associate Professor Amanda Foster presented at the Legal Writing Institute One-Day Workshop in December 2015, hosted by Florida International University College of Law in Miami.
Becka Rich, Senior Associate Director
of the Panza Maurer Law Library had her program proposal, Making Legal Research an Epic Win: Using Games to Engage Lawyers and Students accepted for the joint 2016 SEAALL/SWALL Annual Conference in Dallas April 14-16, 2016.
Alison Rosenberg, Head of Outreach and Reference Services at the Panza Maurer Law Library was selected by the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) for its 2016 Leadership Academy.
Professor John Sanchez
wrote an article that was published in the American Journal of Trial Advocacy, The Accrual of Constructive Discharge Claims Under Title VII, 39 Am. J. Trial Advocacy 65 (2015).
Professor Florence Shu-Acquaye has accepted an offer from the Houston International Law Journal to publish her article titled "The Ebola Virus Prevention and Human Rights Implications."

Students Earn Top 4 Spot at Southern Regional Trial Competition
NSU Law students Calvin Austin, Ashanda Carter, Anya Francis, and Chelsea Strayhorn finished in the top four at the at the Southeastern Regional Conference of the National Black Law Students Association Thurgood Marshall Mock Trial Competition. The team competed in six trials over four days, winning all their trials to get into the "Final Four." Their coaches were NSU Law Alumni Harold Pryor (JD 2012), Assistant State Attorney in Broward County, FL and Nikeisha Pryor (JD 2011), a commercial litigation associate at Broad and Cassel in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Law Faculty Recognize Professor & Student for Contributions
Yineth Sanchez (3L), President of Nova Trial Association has been selected by faculty for the Stephanie Aleong Impact Award. Ms. Sanchez chose associate professor Megan Chaney for having the most influence on her law school career. The award will be presented at the annual Barrister's Ball on February 6. The Stephanie Aleong is one of NSU Law's most valuable awards recognizing students who have exhibited compassion, dedication and positive influence as Professor Aleong once did before losing her battle with cancer at the age of 38.

Student Invited to Tallahassee for Dean's Day
Dual-Degree student Saamia Ali Shaikh had the unique opportunity to participate in Dean's Day which is a chance for medical students to meet state legislators. Saamia also met the State Surgeon General, Dr. John Armstrong. As representatives from all of Florida's medical schools, they formed a strong presence to lobby commons interests such as increasing Graduate Medical Education and ensuring the continuation of Medicaid payments to the state's public medical schools.

NSU Law Students Learn Skills at Third Annual Judicial Workshop
On January 29, "The Importance of Professionalism in Adversarial Legal Writing: A Judicial Roundtable Discussion"
took place at the Broward County Courthouse in the Jury Assembly Room. Professor Heather Baxter organized the program with her colleagues:
Professors Olympia Duhart, Shahabudeen Khan, Jane Cross, Camille Lamar, and Joe Hnylka.
The program
reinforced the importance of professionalism in persuasive legal writing and more than 80 first year law students attended the session. A panel of judges shared their collective wisdom, addressing ethical hypotheticals in small break-out groups, then answering questionsfrom the students.
After the event, students attended a reception with the Judges where they were able to get advice on mentoring, internships, and future career paths.

Law Center Plus Seminar Series: Continuing Your Legal Education
Law Center Plus provides ongoing skills training and other resources for our alumni, especially our newest members. A series of ten seminars each year will include practice skills that will build confidence among new attorneys and educate all our alumni seeking to improve their knowledge and skills in a variety of areas. Seminars are held monthly on Friday mornings at the College of Law and are free to alumni in their first 24 months post-graduation. Other alumni and attorneys may attend for a registration fee. All attendees receive a continental breakfast and CLE credits.
Registration for upcoming Law Center Plus Seminars will open each month as the year progresses.
