Join Us in Celebrating Dr. Cierra Kaler-Jones!

Dear Friends, Dr. Cierra Kaler-Jones earned her Ph.D. in education from the Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership at the University of Maryland - College Park this spring while also finishing up her two-year stint as the Education Anew Fellow with Communities for Just Schools Fund and Teaching For Change. Dr. Kaler-Jones' dissertation explored how Black girls use arts-based practices (e.g., movement, music, hair) as mechanisms for identity construction and resistance through the co-creation of a healing-centered out-of-school space.

Her journey towards her doctorate aligned beautifully with her work as Education Anew Fellow. In these and other ways, Cierra’s fellowship has been tilling the ground for the deeper dive CJSF has forecast for our communications strategy and storytelling work.   In that spirit, we are delighted to announce that Dr. Kaler-Jones is staying on as a member of the CJSF squad! As of May 3rd, Cierra is our Director of Storytelling! Stay tuned for more exciting news (and opportunities to engage) with CJSF’s work, including the work of CJSF organizing partners and donor members, as we expand CJSF’s reach and impact in translating the work of organizers to multiple stakeholders, to increase support for organizers and education and racial justice organizing.
