Pursuing Dreams:

Jesus R.'s Path to Medical School

Jesus R. has always been driven by a passion for science and a desire to make a difference in people's lives. As a first-generation college student, he blazed a trail for his family by attending UC Davis, where he majored in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with an emphasis on Global Disease. His dedication led him to meaningful work contributing to vaccine research during the pandemic, proving that his dreams of helping others through medicine were well within reach.

When unexpected challenges temporarily interrupted his academic journey, Jesus didn't abandon his goals; he got strategic about achieving them. Connecting with Catholic Charities' program in Career Advisory opened new doors for him. Through job search support, educational counseling, and assistance with CalFresh and unemployment benefits, Jesus found the stability he needed to refocus on his education. The Helping Hands Fund provided rental assistance during this transition period, and with the help of a roommate to share housing costs, he built a solid foundation for his comeback.

Today, Jesus R. is exactly where he wants to be, back in school and actively pursuing his dream of attending medical school. With his unemployment benefits secured, shared housing expenses in place, and ongoing support from our Career Advisory programs, he's taking strategic steps toward both academic and financial stability. His journey is a powerful reminder that with the right support and unwavering commitment, dreams can become reality.

Opening Doors to Healthcare

In San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, nearly 368,000 residents face barriers to accessing healthcare coverage due to financial hardship, lack of insurance, or the complexity of enrollment processes. Without support, critical medical needs often go unmet, leading to worsening health outcomes and deeper disparities in our communities.

At Catholic Charities, we bridge this gap through our Healthcare Access Program, offering Medi-Cal enrollment and redetermination assistance, personalized medical guidance, and telehealth services through our Health Hub. Our team not only helps families secure coverage but also addresses the root causes of health inequities by connecting clients to food, housing, and financial resources. Together, these efforts create pathways to lasting wellness and equitable care for every individual we serve.

A Legacy of Support for

Women and Families

The Valenzuela Foundation has been a partner in our mission to serve community members across the Inland Empire. Founded by Guillermo J. Valenzuela, a former Board Member of Catholic Charities San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, the foundation is dedicated to improving the health of underserved communities in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, with a particular focus on supporting women's health and increasing access to medical providers. Their belief that women are the backbone of families and communities drives their commitment to ensuring access to essential healthcare providers and services throughout the region.

Through their grants, the Valenzuela Foundation has provided critical general operating support for caseworkers at our San Bernardino Regional Center, enabling us to serve low-income women and their families with compassionate, comprehensive care. This partnership has strengthened our capacity to respond to urgent community needs while fostering long-term stability for those we serve. As we complete the third year of this transformative grant, the foundation's investment continues to empower our caseworkers to deliver services with dignity and build pathways to health equity for families throughout the Inland Empire.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the Valenzuela Foundation for their longstanding commitment and generous support. Their dedication to improving the health and well-being of underserved communities continues to empower Catholic Charities San Bernardino and Riverside Counties to serve our community members with dignity and compassion. Through partnerships like this, we are building a legacy of health equity, community well-being, and long-term stability for families across the region we all call home.
