Last month, I shared that Michigan may be facing future Medicaid cuts.

Since June 1st, federal budget proposals have been moving through Congress with Michigan's most vulnerable residents at risk:

$535 billion in Medicaid cuts proposed over the next 10 years.
Up to 750,000 Michigan residents could lose coverage including children, seniors, pregnant women, and people with disabilities.
$2.3 billion in losses for Michigan hospitals and nursing homes, and $325 million annually, threatening services and forcing closures.

As Michigan's largest volunteer-led free clinic, we don't receive Medicaid funding, but we will absolutely feel this impact in our waiting room. When thousands of people lose their insurance, they will turn to places like GBCHC for care.

We're already preparing for a dramatic surge in demand for our medical, dental, pharmacy, and vision services. Here's how you can make a difference:

Dr. Zoghlin: A Perfect Match for Our Mission

We are thrilled to announce Dr. Gayla Zoghlin as our new Medical Director. Dr. Zoghlin brings decades of family practice experience and a deep commitment to serving diverse communities that perfectly align with GBCHC.

Dr. Zoghlin's upbringing in rural New York, where her father served as the town doctor to families from different backgrounds, including many migrant families, exposed her to diverse circumstances. She deepened this understanding while teaching swimming lessons to young children and working in his medical practice throughout high school. This foundation shaped her path through medical school at the University of Michigan and a residency at Providence Hospital, where she learned to consider patients' life circumstances as essential to their medical care.

After spending nine years teaching residents and nearly three decades in family practice in Novi, Dr. Zoghlin retired in 2023 but knew she wanted to continue using her skills to serve others. When a friend mentioned GBCHC, she discovered our clinic just 15 minutes from her home and began volunteering last July. "Despite living just 15 minutes from GBCHC, I didn't know it existed," she reflects. "When I retired, I knew I wanted to use my knowledge and skills in some way, but I didn't know how or where. I have found the right place at GBCHC."

What draws Dr. Zoghlin to our clinic are the people and the collaborative spirit of care. She says, "There are so many things about our clinic that I love. That starts with the people! Our team is committed to caring for our patients and made me feel right at home. I enjoy working with our volunteer nurses, scribes, interpreters and med students. We collaborate well for the sake of our patients."

Celebrating Dr. Jacques Legacy

As Dr. Jessica Jacques prepares to relocate, we are deeply grateful for her incredible service as our Lead Optometrist and the transformative impact she has made on our eye clinic. Her journey with GBCHC began in October 2020 when her husband, a clinic volunteer from 2016 to 2019, introduced her to our community.

"I was asked to consult on a red eye case, and I never left," she recalls. Under her leadership, what started as basic ocular health exams has flourished into a comprehensive eye care clinic offering full exams, prescription glasses, free eyewear partnerships, disease management, retinal imaging, and specialized testing for conditions like glaucoma.

Dr. Jacques's dedication stems from her deep understanding of how vision care transforms lives. "People often underestimate how transformative a pair of glasses can be. They allow someone to connect with loved ones, perform their job, drive safely, and even fully enjoy a meal. Knowing that each hour I spend at GBCHC helps improve my patients' quality of life is what keeps me coming back," she explains.

Her impact has been remarkable: over 4.5 years, she provided approximately 650 pairs of glasses to patients and reassured countless others who feared they were losing their sight when they simply needed corrective lenses.

While we miss Dr. Jacques's presence, we are thrilled that she will continue serving on our board, bringing her unique perspective as both a healthcare provider and direct volunteer. "I've been telling people that the hardest part of moving isn't leaving family or friends. It's leaving GBCHC," she shares. "Getting the eye clinic up and running at GBCHC will probably be the most meaningful thing I do in my career."

Her experience working with uninsured patients has profoundly shaped her understanding of healthcare access: "I've learned that it's incredibly hard to get back on your feet when your health is holding you back - whether it's from uncontrolled diabetes or hypertension, poor dental care, or simply not having glasses. By helping those who need it most, we lift a major burden and empower them to care for themselves and give back to their communities."

We are so grateful for Dr. Jacques' passion and expertise - her legacy will continue to benefit GBCHC patients for years to come.
