An Artist's Version of Family
Before the pandemic, while experiencing street homelessness and poor mental health, Marc was a regular guest at Our Promise Drop-In Resource Center. Unfortunately, he didn't have any close family or a support system to help him through this tough time. At first, Marc was on the quieter side and hesitant to ask for help, but he was always drawing. When staff took an interest in his work, he instantly lit up. Connecting over something he loved – art – helped open up a discussion about his current situation and goals.
When we shifted our services outdoors during COVID, OP staff didn’t see much of Marc. However, he received a housing voucher through the County’s Coordinated Entry System, and when we resumed services indoors, Marc started coming in again and proudly reported that he had moved into an apartment. Though he had found a place to call home, Marc needed help completing all of the complicated paperwork for his voucher and affordable housing complex. The team jumped right in to help him, and he has maintained his housing stability since then.
Marc continues to be a regular guest at OP, as he values the community and support he receives there. His story is a poignant example of the power of community and the hope that OP offers to those we serve! When OP staff asked Marc to paint a picture that reminded him of family, he painted Our Promise!
