Black Student Union and Staley School of Leadership Studies host ongoing conversation on inequality

 

Kansas State University students from the Black Student Union, the Staley School of Leadership Studies and ICDD partnered together to host a series called Conversation Caf�s for Racial Justice. The series began in January and continues through March.


 

A preparatory session hosted Jan. 29 by the Racial Justice and Inequality Action Committee trained students who wished to help facilitate the future conversation events. The series began on Feb. 2 with a discussion to examine why inequalities exist. The Black History Month keynote speaker Geoffrey Canada presented "Leveling the Playing Field" for the next event. A conversation caf� on Feb. 12 provided students an opportunity to discuss the speech. Read more

Rural Grocery Initiative 

Community food council hosts panel discussion about grocery store opportunity

 

The South Hutchinson-Reno County Food Policy Council hosted a panel discussion Jan. 29 about options for a new grocery store in the community. Approximately 60 residents responded to the public invitation.

 

Sarah Key, a health educator for the Reno County Health Department and a member of the food policy council, helped to organize the event in coordination with David Procter, Director of CECD. Read more

Kansas State University established the Institute for Civic Discourse and Democracy (ICDD) in 2004 to enhance democracy through improved community deliberation. Soon after, the Center for Engagement and Community Development (CECD) was created by K-State in 2006 to connect the resources of the university to significant issues of public need facing Kansas and communities worldwide. To help sustain rural communities due to growing economic problems, CECD launched the Rural Grocery Initiative (RGI) in 2008.
