Ask the Garden Guru

Dear Garden Guru,

What is the best way to get rid of aphids on my succulents? They're only damaging a couple of varieties but the ones that are damaged look pretty bad.

Thanks!

The Secret Season for Vegetable Gardening

Late summer is the "secret season" for vegetable and herb gardening. Warm soil and abundant sunshine will help you grow the groceries you want to eat this fall and winter. Marin & SF gardeners can plant now through October. East Bay gardeners: these vegetables are best planted in late September through October as the weather cools. Here's what to plant this month and next:

• Greens: arugula, chard, endive, escarole, lettuce, mache, spinach. Salad greens are easy to grow year-round in containers and garden beds. Refresh your summer green supply.

• Root crops: beets, carrots, radishes, rutabagas, turnips, and onions (plant all from seed).

• Brassicas: Brussels sprouts, broccoli, bok choy, cabbage, cauliflower, kohlrabi.

• Leafy Brassicas: collards, kale, mustard greens. Note: Agricultural Lime is especially important to feed growing Brassicas.

• Other fall favorites: celery, fava beans, leeks, peas, spring onions. Herbs: parsley, rosemary, sage, thyme.

Our stores are stocked with locally grown organic herbs and vegetable plants. Consult our handy vegetable planting chart and discover what you can plant in late August.

WaterWise Solutions: Get in the Zone!

Group plants with similar water needs together to make watering easier and more efficient. Place pots and thirsty plants near the house where you can keep an eye on them, and use native or Mediterranean plants farther away where they may need very little water once established.
