Dear fellow BCC members!

So much has happened this past year in addition to the new (and old) political climate we currently face. The need to protect LGTBQIA+ rights and our trans family members and to offer a safe and inclusive Jewish place of worship and welcoming community is one of our top priorities. Thanks to generous former members, our endowment is growing to help secure our financial future. We are working to upgrade our security measures. Cantor Rebekkah Mirsky and a variety of diverse cantorial soloists have served in rotation at our Friday night services. We have enjoyed engaging and fulfilling holiday events, including Tu B’Shevat at the Tree People, a Hamentashen-making class, and a 2nd night Seder for 80 people, as well as other inclusive programming. A vision plan with input from our congregation is in the works to strengthen our community and make our synagogue the place we want it to be.

By joining the board, you can be an integral part of this process and BCC's ongoing governance in lock-step with our Rabbi and staff. We currently have three open board seats and two officer positions: Treasurer and Secretary. This is the chance for members who care deeply about BCC and want to work in community, to make a difference, strengthen our impact, make new friends, and more!

Board members are expected to be officer of the evening, greeters or Zoom host at at least one Shabbat service per month, attend our monthly two-hour board meetings on Wednesday night via Zoom or in person, serve on one or more committees, and lead/co-lead the planning of a holiday or social event at BCC.

Here’s what some current board members say about why they serve:

I joined the board because I believe in community and I believe that the community of BCC is essential in supporting all of us in this very challenging and troubling time. I am committed to building our community of love and faith.

-Marie Pedersen

I’m at my best and most productive when I'm organizing things: most recently, BCC's High Holidays and our Palm Springs shabbaton in 2024, and the upcoming Civil Rights Trail tour this year. Serving on the BCC board gives me a chance to enjoy my retirement by giving back to an organization that I believe in. Please join this group of truly dedicated volunteers! -Jonathan Falk

I'm grateful for the chance to give back to my community through board service. Being part of BCC's board has helped me feel closer and more connected to not just other board members, but everyone in the congregation. It has also helped me understand how much hard work goes into keeping our synagogue running smoothly. I am glad that we have a whole team to help!

-Samantha Eisenberg

We'd love to welcome some new voices and perspectives to BCC's lay leadership and hope you'll consider volunteering as a board member.

If you are interested in running for one of the above positions, or if you want to nominate a fellow congregant, please contact board development committee chairs Debby Chanen (dchanen@gmail.com) or Robin Berkowitz (veniceberko@gmail.com). Please let us know by June 8 if you are interested. We will be voting at the Annual Congregational Meeting on July 13 at 10 am at BCC.

If you want to get more involved, but full-on board membership sounds like a step too far, we are reinvigorating BCC’s various committees and could use your help. Please share your interest in committee work with Debby and/or Robin as well.

Thank you for your time and consideration. We look forward to hearing from you!

B’shalom,

Debby Chanen & Robin Berkovitz, Board Development Committee Co-chairs
