Welcome to

THE NEW AGE OF AGING

AIHS celebrated it's 50th Anniversary and kicked off The New Age of Aging at its 50th Anniversary Stakeholder Summit & Community Conversation!

Featured at the event was visionary, best-selling author and Founder & CEO of Age Wave Dr. Ken Dychtwald.

Dr. Dychtwald shared his Five Needed Course Corrections For the Next Fifty Years.

1) New Longevity Lifestages

In the late 1800s, there were only three stages of life. Today, there are seven:

  • Childhood
  • Adolescence
  • Young Adulthood
  • Adulthood
  • Middlescence
  • Late Adulthood
  • Elderhood

2) Matching Our Healthspans to Our Lifespans

The average life expectancy for an American is 78.5 years, but the average American is expected to be healthy for only 66 years. Meanwhile, the U.S. spends more on healthcare than any other country.

We need to draw attention to this disconnect and match our healthspans to our lifespans.

3) Averting Mass Elder Poverty

81% of Americans don't know how much money they'll need to fund their retirement.

The greatest financial worries are healthcare and long-term care.

Social Security is an essential lifeline for so many older adults.

4) Eliminating Ageism

When the U.S. was founded in the late 1700s, older adults had a life expectancy of 37 years.

Do age-discrimination and age-disregard only go one way?

5) Establishing a New Purpose for Maturity

  • Older adults need our help
  • We need their help too
  • It's time for an Elder Corps

Please help us bring Dr. Dychtwald's vision to northeast Indiana. Your contributions go directly towards life changing supports that help Hoosiers live in their own homes. We are requesting $50 donations in celebration of 50 years!

Join the

Community Conversation

A Community Conversation Q&A panel moderated by AIHS President & CEO Connie Benton Wolfe followed Dr. Dychtwald's keynote presentation.

Here’s what we heard from one of our stakeholders:

"I’ve been to three of the AIHS Annual Meetings and I felt this was the best speaker of all! Educational – Informative – Forward-thinking! Our whole table was wiping away tears after the video with the son being a caregiver to his father; I’d never really thought about the reality of Health Span vs Lifespan that Dr. Dychtwald talked about. He made me wonder what more can I do to help address the issues of an aging population being fully supported in our community. I look forward to more Community Conversations!"

AIHS is interested in hearing from you and will continue the Conversation throughout our anniversary year.

50 Years

50 Reasons to

Support AIHS

AIHS’ efforts on behalf of our caregivers was just published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society!

What began as a search to find appropriate technology-based support for clients of our family caregiver program resulted in a collaboration with the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Lee Lindquist and her research team analyzed the data collected by AIHS and developed a manuscript to share with professionals and family caregivers.

The manuscript entitled "The Family Caregiver Support Apps" is just one of many academic collaborations AIHS has participated in as we continue to raise the Standard of Excellence in our services. Our research grants and associated projects have strengthened us to be at the forefront of translating research into practice for the benefit of Older Hoosiers and the nationwide aging network. Our current project revenue will extend into the next decade.
