Dear Friends and Neighbors,
I would like to invite you to our large open house to discuss the latest happenings around the Inwood NYC neighborhood planning process. Over the past year, we have engaged well over 1,000 residents, hearing their ideas, concerns and thoughts for building and sustaining the community we know and love for the coming decades. A draft proposal was produced in May by NYC EDC, a draft now able to be shaped with your input and insight. This draft proposal entails key investments in local infrastructure, incentives to build new affordable and mixed income housing east of 10th Avenue in Inwood and ideas to spur economic development and job growth in the burgeoning fields of technology and health to connect our residents with quality jobs.
This process was announced several years ago during my State of the District address, where I highlighted the dire challenges our community faces when it comes to affordable housing. While we have a crucial stock of rent regulated units, we've seen landlords take up shameful tactics to push tenants out and convert these apartments to market rate levels. Once pushed out, tenants have few options in the suddenly pricier neighborhood they've long lived in. This is happening; it is real and it is underway.
We see every day the cost of doing nothing and it is high. The fears of gentrification and rising rents and cost of living, are ones that plague the many residents who have lived in this community for decades; who fought through the tough years in order to celebrate where we are today. We cannot allow the hard work we've all put in to be left to landlords now pushing people out.
For Upper Manhattan to remain a welcoming place for all, regardless of race, religion or socio-economic background, we must be thoughtful and deliberate in our approach and meet these challenges head-on. InwoodNYC is about taking action, being proactive rather than reactive to a moment of sudden crisis. We now have an opportunity to lead this discussion and see our concerns addressed.
Thus far in this process, conversations have circled around how we can expand the stock of affordable housing we so desperately need; how to improve and fortify our infrastructure for the next 50 years; and how we can spur economic development and job growth in a community with higher than average unemployment and incomes levels below the city's median.
On Thursday evening, I hope to hear your contribution to this discussion. I strongly encourage you to attend, provide input, hear where we are in the process and add your voice to where we can go. It is important to come equipped with ideas as opposed to pure objections. We cannot put our heads in the sand as our residents are pushed out and our neighbors most in need are left stranded.
The time to take action is now and I hope your voice will be added to this discussion.

Me gustaría invitarle a nuestra gran casa abierta para discutir los últimos acontecimientos en todo el proceso de planificación de la vecindad de Inwood, Nueva York. Durante el último año, hemos involucrado a más de 1.000 habitantes, escuchando sus ideas, inquietudes y pensamientos para la construcción y el mantenimiento de la comunidad que conocemos y amamos para décadas por venir.
Este proceso se anunció hace varios años durante mi discurso de Rendición de Cuentas, en la cual puse de relieve la extrema necesidad que enfrenta nuestra comunidad cuando se trata de la vivienda asequible. Si bien tenemos un caudal crucial de alquiler de vivienda regulada, hemos visto a los propietarios adoptar hasta tácticas vergonzosas para desplazar a los inquilinos, y convertir estos apartamentos a precio de mercado. Una vez desplazados, los inquilinos tienen pocas opciones en el vecindario en que han residido por mucho tiempo y que de repente se ha tornado mucho más costoso. Esto está sucediendo; es real y está en marcha.
Todos los días observamos el costo de no hacer nada, y es elevado. El miedo a la gentrificación, el incremento de los alquileres y el costo de vida, es una de las plagas que afecta a los muchos residentes quienes han residido en esta comunidad durante décadas; quienes han luchado a través de los años difíciles con el fin de celebrar el lugar donde estamos hoy. No podemos permitir que el arduo trabajo que todos hemos realizado haya sido en balde.
Para que el Alto Manhattan continúe siendo un lugar acogedor para las personas de diferentes razas y niveles socioeconómicos, debemos ser reflexivos y deliberantes en nuestro enfoque y hacer frente a estos desafíos. InwoodNYC se trata de tomar acción, ser proactivo en lugar de responder a un momento de crisis repentina. Este momento es uno de oportunidad, donde, a diferencia del pasado, nuestra comunidad está liderando la discusión acerca de nuestro futuro.
Hasta el momento, las discusiones han girado sobre cómo podemos ampliar el caudal de viviendas asequibles que tanto necesitamos; cómo mejorar y fortalecer nuestra infraestructura para los próximos 50 años; y cómo podemos estimular el desarrollo económico y el crecimiento del empleo para una comunidad con una tasa de desempleo mayor que el promedio y por debajo de la media de ingresos de la ciudad.
El jueves por la noche, espero escuchar sobre su contribución a este debate. Les exhorto con firmeza a asistir, proporcionar información, escuchar donde nos encontramos en el proceso, y añadir su voz sobre hacia donde podemos ir. Es importante que venga equipado con las ideas en contraposición a puras objeciones No podemos esconder nuestras cabezas en la arena mientras nuestros residentes son desplazados y nuestros vecinos más necesitados se quedan varados.
El momento de tomar acción es ahora y espero que su voz se integrará a esta discusión.
