A Speedy Getaway Didn’t Get Far Thanks to Corporal Terry and K9 Griff!

WCSO Targets Dangerous Driving in St. Patrick’s Day Traffic Safety Mission

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) joined the Metro Area Traffic Enforcement Collaboration (MATEC) for an enhanced traffic safety mission from March 14 to 18 to keep roadways safe over the St. Patrick's Day weekend.

Law enforcement agencies across Oregon and Washington dedicated extra patrols to target the most dangerous driving behaviors—speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, lane departures, and failure to wear a seatbelt—all of which are leading causes of serious and fatal crashes.

During the mission, WCSO’s Traffic Safety Unit conducted 277 traffic stops, with speeding being the most common violation. Deputies also made 15 arrests for impaired driving (DUII). Thanks to these proactive efforts, Washington County had zero fatal crashes during the enforcement period.

We appreciate our community’s commitment to responsible driving. Let’s keep our roads safe—every day of the year.

Talking to Kids About Stranger Awareness

Many of us grew up hearing “stranger danger,” but the conversation has evolved. Instead of teaching kids to fear all strangers, it’s important to help them understand who they can turn to for help and how to stay safe in different situations.

Talk to your child about identifying safe strangers (like police officers or store employees), knowing where to go if they get separated from their trusted adult, and practicing online safety. These conversations may feel uncomfortable, but they are key to keeping kids safe.

Are you planning to travel over spring break? If you’re going to be away from home for an extended time, it’s important to avoid giving criminals any hints that your house is unoccupied.

Here are some precautionary measures to help ensure the safety of your home and belongings while you’re away.

🏡Find a friend, trusted neighbor, or family member to monitor your home. Leave them a key so they can stop by and ensure everything is in order. They can alert you if anything is off, like a broken window or an open door.

🏡Take care of mail deliveries. Ask someone to collect your mail or put a vacation hold on it through the United States Postal Service. Make sure to take care of all packages, too. Creating an account with the delivery service provider allows you to reroute packages to a designated pick-up location.

🏡Plan for trash pickup. Ask a neighbor to put away your bins for you so they don’t stay on the curb for too long. It could be a sign that no one is home.

🏡Program your home with safety tools. A smart plug is a great way to control your lights with an app on your phone. Old-style mechanical timers work well, too. You can program your TV to turn on sometimes. Alarm systems, video doorbells, and cameras are great tools as well.

Stay safe!
