The St. Louis Park Summer Reading Festival will be underway next week! Join us for 12 free, family-friendly events and activities from August 8-14, 2026!

The Summer Reading Festival promotes literacy, fosters a love of reading beyond the classroom, and creates meaningful community connections.

This year's festival features two new events that will expand the reading fun:

  • The Little Free Library Tour leads families on a self-guided tour to neighborhood Little Free Library locations, where visitors can take a free book or leave a book behind to share with others. A custom St. Louis Park Little Free Library guide will be available at the Children First Ice Cream Social on August 8th, 2026 or can be found on the Summer Reading Festival website.
  • Storybook Trail Adventure at Westwood Hills Nature Center invites families to immerse themselves in a nature-themed story presented by the Westwood Hills interpretive naturalists, then explore the trails on an exciting scavenger hunt! Get ready for a fun afternoon of outdoor activity on Monday, August 10th.

Free children's books will be provided at each Summer Reading Festival event (while supplies last), with more young adult titles available than in previous years so readers of all ages can find their next favorite read!

Earlier this month, Children First took part in the Trail of Small Wonders Opening Day Festival at Westwood Hills Nature Center! Organized by St. Louis Park Friends of the Arts, the trail features community-made tiny houses scattered along the nature center's trails.

We were there to share information about the upcoming Summer Reading Festival, Youth For Change Coalition, and other Children First programming and initiatives. We loved seeing everyone in the spirit of the event with their magic wands and costumes!

Calling All Teens: Join the Youth For Change Coalition in 2026–2027!

Children First is seeking dedicated high school students who want to develop their leadership skills and make a positive impact in their community. Members of the Youth For Change Coalition (Y4CC) work alongside peers and adult coaches to identify challenges facing local youth, develop solutions, and implement strategies focused on mental wellness and equity in Hopkins, St. Louis Park, and surrounding communities.

During the 2026–2027 school year, Y4CC members will continue working to improve youth mental health and reduce suicide risk among area youth by promoting mental well-being, hope, and resilience. Past projects have included mental wellness workshops, a youth mental health position paper, and partnerships with local organizations to raise awareness.
