Building the Future: Beam by Beam!

Hey, Beach!


The future University Student Union (USU) is taking shape! Throughout October, crews have been installing the structural steel that will form the building’s framework—a visible step forward in the Future U renovation and expansion project.


Behind the scenes, work is also advancing on the heating and cooling, fire sprinkler and electrical systems that will support the building’s daily operations. Along the western retaining wall, crews are installing waterproofing to help protect the building from moisture.

Progress at a Glance


• 98% complete: Shoring—the support system that stabilizes the excavation area—for the expansion.
• Approximately 87% complete: Seismic retrofit work to strengthen the existing building for earthquake safety.
• Complete: Site excavation and existing building demolition.
• Arriving on-site: Materials for the building’s new utility systems.

As the month comes to a close, crews anticipate completing the remaining lower-level concrete flooring, walls along the west terrace and additional concrete floors that will form part of the building’s upper levels.



Each milestone brings us closer to a reimagined student union—a place for future generations of Beach students to gather, connect and make memories.

What's Next?

As the new USU takes shape, you’ll have more opportunities to help shape how it looks and feels—including the furniture you’ll use to study, relax and connect with friends.

Some of you have already helped us get started! At Week of Welcome, our construction and design partners, PENTA | Gensler, served up shaved ice alongside a sneak peek at the building’s floor plans and layout. At Smorgasport, students tried out potential furniture options and shared which pieces felt most comfortable and inviting. Check out the Future U Gallery to see students exploring the plans, testing furniture and helping shape their future USU!

Now, it’s your turn to take a seat! Next time you’re at the Student Recreation & Wellness Center (SRWC), check out the furniture installation, try the options and let us know what you like best. Your feedback will help inform furniture selections for the future USU.
