Leveraging System Strengths to Solve Capacity Gaps in Limited-Resource Environments Community of Learning

May 21–October 15, 2026

This four-part Community of Learning (CoL) series examines how leadership, networks, flexibility, and collaboration can equip AIM participating facilities operating in limited-resource environments to implement AIM patient safety bundles (PSB). The CoL will focus on how system strengths can be leveraged to address many of the current challenges, including competing priorities and limited capacity, the solo champion reality, and how small denominators make traditional data analysis a challenge.

Together, we will explore strategies for staff support, customized bundle rollout, and data utilization in low-volume settings. Each session features insights from AIM entities and participating hospitals, offering real-world strategies to strengthen systems for sustainable change:

  • Session 1: From Solo Champion to System Catalyst: Leading Change in Limited-Resource Perinatal Care Setting | Thursday, May 21, 2026 at 3pm ET

  • Session 2: Meeting Facilities Where They Are: Considerations for Customizing PSB Implementation | Thursday July 23, 2026 at 3pm ET

  • Session 3: The Power of Connection: Scaling Maternal Care Through Partnerships | Thursday, September 10, 2026 at 3pm ET

  • Session 4: Strategies for data utilization in low-volume settings | Thursday, October 15, 2026 at 3pm ET

AIM Obstetric Emergency Readiness Resource Kit

This resource kit is a collection of best practices to support readiness efforts to appropriately care for patients experiencing obstetric emergencies in non-obstetric or lower-resources settings. This resource kit may particularly benefit Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine clinicians, nursing administrators, and other leaders in clinical settings that may not routinely provide obstetric services or encounter an obstetric emergency.

We recently refreshed this resource kit so that resources are easier to find!

State Entity Bright Spot

Texas Collaborative for Healthy Mothers and Babies

A 2020 review by the Texas Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review Committee and Texas Department of State Health Services revealed that preeclampsia and eclampsia were the leading cause of death in 11% of pregnancy–related deaths, and that 50% of these deaths occurred within 42 days of delivery. The Texas Collaborative for Healthy Mothers and Babies (TCHMB) recognized this as an opportunity to improve diagnosis and treatment of preeclampsia and eclampsia to prevent pregnancy-related deaths by working with health providers in emergency departments.

TCHMB’s Recognition and Response to Postpartum Preeclampsia in the Emergency Department (PPED) project aims to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality by identifying and treating postpartum patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) with severe hypertension or preeclampsia in a timely fashion. Learn more about this initiative and check out their Myth vs Fact: Preeclampsia fact sheet. The Understanding Preeclampsia: A Guide for Preeclampsia provides evidence-based information on preeclampsia, just in time for National Preeclampsia Awareness Month in May.
