New Blog from the OTL

As we approach finals and the winter season, you may need to coordinate with your students regarding absences. Check out our new blog Using Canvas to Navigate Student Absences for ideas about how to make coursework accessible to students who are out without a lot of extra work.

For more support as you plan the rest of your term, schedule a 1:1 with an OTL Instructional Designer.
ePortfolio Focus Groups

The DU Portfolio replacement project is underway and we want to hear from you! In partnership with Information Technology, we will be conducting three focus groups to gather feedback as we select the next e-Portfolio software. We know there are many uses of DU portfolio. The focus groups below are to help us learn what you want from the next platform for the use of ePortfolio in your courses or programs as a pedagogical tool for supporting integrative learning.

Wednesday, November 10, 2:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Friday, November 12, 9:00 - 10:00 a.m.
Monday, November 15, 3:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Log-in to DU Portfolio and visit the DU Portfolio Decommission page for the Zoom links to the focus groups and to learn more about the project.

Submitting Required Textbooks to the Bookstore for Winter 2022

Have you submitted your required textbooks to the DU Bookstore for Winter 2022 yet? If not, please submit these to the DU Bookstore as soon as possible. Currently, approximately 70% of Winter 2022 Courses have been submitted! Submitting your required textbook information through the DU Bookstore helps create better access for all students and will also allow the Disability Services Program (DSP) more time to process Alternate Format Text (AFT) requests. Students with the AFT accommodation are responsible for submitting their own AFT Request Form through the DSP, but they need to know the details of their required textbooks in order to submit their requests.

Finals and Student Accommodations

Do you have a student planning to take their finals in the DSP Testing Center? Students can now submit their Test Requests through the Student Accommodate Portal for their Fall 2021 finals. As a faculty member, you will be notified via email if a student has requested to test in the DSP Testing Center. Faculty members will need to provide DSP with parameters for the assessment via the Faculty Accommodate Portal. If you need support in ensuring your exams are set up appropriately for students with DSP accommodations (such as extra time), please reach out to Ellen Hogan, OTL’s Accessibility Technologist for Learning and Instruction at [email protected]

On Thursday, November 4, 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., you are invited to join Ellen in the workshop Accommodating Students Using Accommodate to learn more about the Faculty Accommodate Portal and the ‘how-tos’ for providing testing information. This event will be hyflex, so feel free to join in person or via zoom. If you are not available to attend, a recording will be emailed afterward to all registered participants.
Faculty Learning Community (FLC): Teaching and Professional Faculty Tools for Success

Tools for Success is a faculty learning community designed for teaching and professional faculty (TPF) in the assistant rank at the University of Denver. The FLC will explore areas essential to the success of teaching faculty including: community building, effective instruction, wellness, DU culture, promotion, national trends, and the roles of TPF. We will utilize one book in our sessions (Inclusive Collegiality and Nontenure-Track Faculty: Engaging All Faculty as Colleagues to Promote Healthy Departments and Institutions). The FLC will be led by Dr. Laura Sponsler, Clinical Associate Professor, Higher Education, and Faculty Scholar - Teaching and Professional Faculty.

We will meet in the OTL Conference Room (Anderson Academic Commons 345) weekly during the Winter Quarter on Fridays from 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m., starting on Friday, January 7.

For more information contact Laura Sponsler at [email protected].
Information Session: Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)

Join the Office of Internationalization to learn about Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL). COIL is a pedagogical method of virtually connecting classes at DU with students and faculty at institutions abroad. During the session, we will discuss various approaches to COIL, the value it brings to the 4D student experience, and ways to partner with the Office of Internationalization to add COIL to your course(s).

COIL allows faculty to build new connections or strengthen current ones with colleagues at institutions abroad.

Please register to attend:

4D Student Experience Open Houses and Opportunities

The 4D Experience is DU's reboot of the traditional college experience, continuing our commitment to a customized, holistic education that empowers students to lead lives of meaning and purpose that serve the public good, enabling them to thrive at and beyond the university. There are many opportunities for faculty to get involved in this experience!

4D Faculty and Staff Learning Community
The 4D Learning Community offers both faculty and staff educators the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of students' needs and best practices in holistic student learning and development; inclusive curricular and co-curricular design; and assessment of teaching and learning around the four dimensions (4D) of advancing intellectual growth, exploring character, promoting well-being, and pursuing careers and lives of purpose.
Facilitated by the Faculty and Staff Co-Directors of the 4D Experience, the 4D Learning Community will progress through ten sessions focused on the educational design elements central to the 4D. These sessions will be co-led by critical curricular and co-curricular partners to highlight how we can work together to support holistic learning and development and take an integrated approach to teaching, learning, and programming. Topics will include the public good; justice, equity, diversity, and inclusivity; inclusive teaching and learning; integrative learning and high-impact practices; global learning; mentoring; and career development.

Apply via this Qualtrics form by Wednesday, Dec. 1, 12:00 p.m.

4D Infusion Grants
The 4D Infusion Grants support faculty, staff, and co-curricular educators in conceptualizing, developing, and implementing a specific project that enhances student learning and development around the 4D. These projects may take a variety of forms and may apply towards either curricular or co-curricular educational design over the course of an academic year. Projects will be evaluated on the basis of potential impact; integrative or collaborative design; and scalability.

It is expected that 7 - 8 grants will be awarded for projects taking place over the 2022 winter and spring quarters. Individual applicants are eligible to receive up to $700; teams (not to exceed more than three people) may receive up to $1,500.

Apply via this Qualtrics form by Wednesday, Dec. 1, 12:00 p.m.

4D Innovations Co-Curricular Working Group
The 4D Innovations Working Group will serve as an incubator of creativity and connectivity in the co-curricular space. Comprising co-curricular partners from across campus, the 4D Innovations Group will meet biweekly to collaboratively reimagine, design, and integrate models and practices that further embed the 4D across the co-curriculum. As a design studio, the 4D Innovations Group will seek to foster dynamic co-curricular learning environments; integrate learning across contexts; and test and assess models for scale and impact. This work will serve not only to support and enhance co-curricular learning goals and objectives but also to ensure a more integrated experience for students given the greater integration and collaboration between co-curricular activities.

Apply via this Qualtrics form by Friday, Nov. 5, 12:00 p.m.
