RTS Quarterly News
Summer 2016

We hope your summer has been as productive and re-energizing as ours. Rebuilding Together Seattle supporters and volunteers have been hard at work transforming 52 homes in the past three months!  Nevertheless, if we are to serve 225 households this year, we will need your help to reach them.

There are a lot of exciting ways to joi n the effort this fall.  At the beginning of October, our Young Professionals Society (YPS) will host a Rebuilding Day project, followed a few weeks later by our first "women serving women" program event called She Builds. In between these two Rebuilding Days will be our 7th Annual Beer & Wine Tasting on October 7 th .

So, we hope you'll join us this fall in increasing housing stability while improving the health and safety of our low income neighbors. And, whether you enjoy a locally made drink, the energy of an auction, or just a fun night out at MOHAI, we can't wait to see you at the Beer & Wine Tasting to raise a glass - and a bid card - to help the 119 homeowners on our waiting list. Thank you again to all our supporters, volunteers, and advocates who have brought the sunshine to so many families this summer. We're looking forward to another quarter of preserving and transforming both homes and lives, together.

Sincerely,

Caleb Marshall
Interim Executive Director, Rebuilding Together Seattle
You can help give Irene a safe and healthy home!

Irene is 96 years young and lives on her own in the Allentown neighborhood of Tukwila. She worked as a welder in the shipbuilding industry and considers herself the original "Rosie the Riveter"!

Irene takes pride in her home and her independence: she often hosts her children and grandkids in her home and shares the harvest from her garden with her neighbors. However, parts of Irene's home have become unsafe or unstable and she is in need of  critical repairs and upgrades to help her maintain her independence.

Irene needs a secure walkway around her house, new doors, grab bars in her bathroom, re-sealed windows, and cleaned and sealed gutters. We plan to help Irene through our She Builds project this fall, but we can't do this without your support.

Join us to make Irene's home a safe and healthy place to live: consider donating  or signing up to volunteer with Rebuilding Together Seattle today!

She Builds: Community Impact by Women, for Women  SheBuilds

Women across the country are working hard to make ends meet, often in unsafe homes and communities: more than one in seven women and more than one in five children live in poverty.  In 2015, nearly 60% of Rebuilding Together's homeowners and their families were women. Together we can improve the health and safety of their homes, and empower women to  become changemakers in their communities.

On October 22nd, together with sponsors CBRE and Meredith Corporation, we will be launching our first-ever She Builds. Through this one-day impact project, we'll be restoring the homes of four women in the Allentown neighborhood of Tukwila and facilitating home repair workshops designed to train volunteers and empower homeowners to take their home maintenance needs into their own hands.

We are looking for volunteers and sponsors to join us in empowering women to create real change in our community. Contact Caleb Marshall at [email protected] to learn how you can get involved with She Builds!
Your 2016 Impact: 125 Homes So Far!
Thanks to your support, RTS volunteers have restored 125 homes so  far this year! Our work has impacted the lives of many families throughout our region:
  • Donna has grab bars to help her move around her home safely
  • Harrine has a repaired roof leak and clean gutters
  • Richard has new windows and insulation
  • June has a well-lit yard and repaired siding
However, our work is not yet finished. Our community of supporters drives our impact: with your help, we can reach our strategic goal of serving 225 households this year. Thank you for your support!

Volunteer Spotlight: Anton Dekom
Anton and his girlfriend, Margaret

RTS is excited to welcome Anton Dekom to the Safe at Home volunteer team! Anton is an architect by trade and is putting his repair skills to work to change the lives of his neighbors.

RTS: How did you find out about Rebuilding Together Seattle?
Anton: "Earlier in the year I was volunteering with a couple of different groups, helping homeless individuals relocate to new tent encampments. After working on a handful of tiny house builds, I felt that my carpentry skills might be better utilized if I were more directly involved in a project's planning and construction. I found out about Rebuilding Together after searching online for local nonprofit organizations doing construction work for disadvantaged groups."

What motivates you to volunteer?
"I want to have a positive impact on my community. Here in Seattle we're very cognizant of social and economic inequalities, and I feel as though I can make the most impact by working directly with people in need and by putting my particular skills to good use."

What is your favorite part of volunteering with RTS so far?
"Talking with the homeowners and getting to know their stories. That the experience hasn't just been about showing up and making repairs - that it's also about developing a friendship, that goes beyond simply being the handyman - that, to me, has been  the most rewarding part about volunteering with Rebuilding Together."
