The Winthrop Harbor Police Department offers full testing services for the position of Entry Level Police Officer through National Testing Network, Inc.
The testing period is open until January 19, 2024

What to expect at the www.nationaltestingnetwork.com website:
• Completion of the application process

• Detailed information about the testing process for entry-level testing.
• Schedule your own convenient test time. Tests are offered virtually or in person multiple times a week, including Saturdays.
Upon completion of the entry-level exam, all candidate scores are automatically forwarded to the Winthrop Harbor Police Department. Candidates who attain a passing score on both the entry level exam and the physical abilities test will be placed on the department’s eligibility list. The Winthrop Harbor Police Department will contact candidates on the list and invite them to participate in subsequent stages of the department selection process.
National Testing Network is a service provided to conduct entry-level testing in a standardized, professional environment. National Testing Network does not replace the Winthrop Harbor Police Department’s role in the candidate selection process. All candidate results are provided to Winthrop Harbor Police Department where the final evaluations and candidate selections are made.
You will be tested on three portions (Video, Reading & Writing) and must pass each. An average score of all three portions will be determined. The Winthrop Harbor Police Commission has set a cutoff score of 70%. Scores will be available in your NTN account within 2-3 days.

Salary range $54,142 to $78,977
Salary increases: After academy $ 62,337
After 12-month probation $ 65,166
Completion of 2nd year $ 70,616

Requirements
- Entry Level: at least 21 and under 35 years of age, special considerations for those that served in the Military.
- US citizen or legally allowed to work in the US
- High School Graduate or GED
- Valid Driver’s License
- Ability to read / speak English
- Vision Must be correctable to 20/20 vision; possess normal peripheral vision; ability to see in color.

*Prior Experience: Not required, but preferred.
Necessary Certifications
Must obtain a Physical Agility Test Card (POWER test) through NIPSTA, Joliet Junior College, Triton College, or other ILETSB-certified physical testing facilities no more than one year before the date of application.
Application Process

Candidates must pass the written exam and an interview with the board of fire and police commissioners to be placed on the initial eligibility list. Education/military points are then solicited and added to the list, resulting in the final eligibility list.
As positions become available, candidate background investigations, including polygraph exams, are conducted and reviewed by the board of fire and police commissioners. If conditional offers of employment are extended, candidates must pass a psychological assessment, physical exams, and drug screening prior to hiring.
The Village of Winthrop Harbor is a drug-free workplace, including marijuana. Candidates will be subject to a pre-employment drug screen, physical and background check post offer.
- Applicant must have no felony convictions. Applicant with a record of misdemeanor convictions may be disqualified from taking examinations as set forth in 65 ILCS 5/10-1-7(c).
- Applicant may not be prohibited by any court action and/or state or federal statute from carrying a firearm and must possess or be eligible to receive a valid Illinois Firearm’s Owner Identification Card.
- Applicant must have a high school diploma or equivalent
- At time of appointment, the applicant must be a United States citizen or be legally authorized to work in the US and must possess a valid Illinois driver's license or equivalent.
- Generally, applicants must also be in good health, be of good moral character and not possess an adverse police record. Applicants should possess physical strength and agility sufficient to handle aggressive situations, be able to work under adverse weather conditions, be able to think and act quickly in emergency situations and possess good general intelligence and emotional stability.

VETERAN’S PREFERENCE POINTS
Applicants who were engaged in the military or naval service of the United States for a period of at least oneyear and who were honorably discharged therefrom, or who are not on may hereafter be on inactive or reserve duty in such military or naval service (not including, however, in the case of offices, positions and places of employment in the police department, persons who were convicted by court- martial of disobedience of orders, where such disobedience consisted in the refusal to perform military service on the ground of religious or conscientious objections against war) shall receive five (5) points. Proof of such service must include a copy of Military Form DD-214 (long form) as proof of active service, evidence of the honorable discharge, and a sworn affidavit by the applicant.
EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE PREFERENCE POINTS
Applicants who have successfully obtained an associate’s degree in the field of law enforcement, criminal justice, or a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college shall receive five (5) points provided that the applicant has not received Veteran’s preference points. A certified transcript must be included with the request for preference points as proof of the attainment of a degree.
