Urge Governor Newsom to sign SB 436
8.29.2019
Help us Urge Governor Newsom to Sign SB 436 Into Law
CFRA Members- a HUGE thank you goes out to YOU and your support in getting our bill through both legislative houses!

SB 436, the bill we introduced earlier this year which would define what a Family Resource Center (FRC) is in California law, has passed through the state Senate and Assembly houses with no opposition. Without your input, support, insight and guidance over the last year, we could not have done this. This momentous accomplishment shows our CFRA membership, as well as the entire family strengthening field, what we can do TOGETHER! We are so honored and humbled to have gone through this process with you, and we are so excited to see what we do next.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, we just need ONE MORE thing in order for our bill to become law- Governor Newsom’s signature! We are so thrilled to have a champion like Governor Newsom, who invested $2 billion this year in his budget to support children and families in California. We are asking you to help us show the support that the FRC and family strengthening field have for SB 436, and urge Governor Newsom to sign SB 436 into law.

You can find a copy of the letter that will be sent to Governor Newsom here .

To show your support is EASY! Email Jenn at CFRA at jsantos@thecapcenter.org and let us know that you’re interested in signing on no later than COB September 6 . In the email, include your organization’s logo, your name/title and organization’s name, and we’ll take it from there. Thanks again for all you do for children and families!

What is a Family Resource Center and what does it look like?
Join this virtual visit to a Family Resource Center (FRC) in upstate New York led by a staff member and a parent leader. Especially if you have not had the opportunity to see a FRC in person, this webinar will give you a sense of that experience.

The Jennie Mose Family Resource Center is one of the more than 3,000 FRCs in 29 states and the District of Columbia that work with families in a strengths-based, multigenerational, family-centered approach to enhance parenting skills, foster the healthy development and well-being of children, youth, and families, prevent child abuse, increase school readiness, connect families to resources, develop parent and community leadership, engage males and fathers, support healthy marital and couples relationships, and promote family economic success.

The Latest in Immigration:
Public Charge
Recently, the Trump administration published DHS's Public Charge rule, which will go into effect on October 15, 2019. This rule establishes a new definition of "public charge" and new procedures by which adjudicators will determine if an applicant for an immigrant or nonimmigrant visa is likely to become a public charge. It includes lengthening the list of public benefits, establishing a new system of positively and negatively weighed factors that fall into the public charge analysis. The regulation will negatively impact immigrant families and threatens their pathway to a green card if they use public benefits, including Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicaid, and Federal Public Housing - Section 8 Housing Vouchers, Social Security Income (SSI), and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). A courageous network of advocates and community groups are fighting for children and families during this uncertain and difficult time. We will continue to update the field on the latest news.

CFRA has compiled a list of resources for agencies to use when doing outreach or want to learn more about public charge
