EXPLORING SAFETY!
With Ron's Auto

As part of Skills NWT's Power Up!, the WSCC will once again partner with local Yellowknife employer Ron's Equipment Rental and Industrial Supply (also known as Ron's Auto) to offer Grade 8 students the chance to conduct a mock safety inspection in an active workplace.

Under the guidance of WSCC Safety Officers and the Safety & Training Manager at Ron's Auto, students  will get a chance to experience a day in the life of a Safety Officer and learn how to recognize and deal with workplace hazards.

"You're never too young to start learning about safety. Young workers need to know that they have rights as workers to a safe workplace: the right to know, the right to participate, and the right to refuse," says Dave Grundy, WSCC President and CEO. "Skills Power Up! gives us a chance to offer students an interactive experience that will show them not only how relevant safety is and the possibilities that are available with a career in safety, but also that they can be safety ambassadors, wherever life takes them."

STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEMBERS WANTED

Do you have a passion for safety? Do you want to help ensure northern workplaces are safe, and workers injured on the job are cared for? If you answered yes, the WSCC has the perfect role for you.

The WSCC is seeking new members from across the Northwest Territories and Nunavut for a Stakeholder Engagement Committee (SEC) to provide feedback on all areas of WSCC services, including policy creation, program development, and safety resources and materials.

If you are interested in this exciting opportunity to offer a fresh perspective, send your resume, along with an email stating why you would like to participate, to sec@wscc.nt.ca.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to workplace health and safety, be able to commit to deadlines, and use email as a primary means of communicating with the WSCC. SEC members receive a quarterly honourarium of $275 ($1,100 per year) based on their level of participation. Terms are for two years.
SAFE ADVANTAGE
PROGRAM REVIEW UNDERWAY

In September 2018, the WSCC concluded the 2017/2018 cycle of the Safe Advantage Program. This marks the tenth year the WSCC has administered this safety incentive program to recognize and reward employers with proven health and safety, return to work/claims management practices, and low claims cost experience.

As part of our commitment to ensure that our initiatives remain relevant and meaningful, the WSCC will conduct a review of the Safe Advantage Program. Safe Advantage employers are not required to submit a Management Practices Questionnaire while the program is on hold and undergoing review.

The review process will give stakeholders the opportunity to provide input on the Safe Advantage Program. The WSCC remains as committed as ever to working with employers to advance the safety culture.

ANNUAL PAYROLL REPORT
REMINDER: OHS REQUIREMENT

In early December, employers will receive information about submitting the Annual Payroll Report through WSCC Connect. The deadline is February 28, 2019,  but you can submit as early as January 2, 2019 .

Please note that the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) section introduced last year is a requirement for completing your submission. Before starting the filing process, WSCC Connect users should consult with the person who manages OHS in their company (or the company they are filing for) to provide Yes/No answers to the OHS questions.  The  complete set of questions with explanations of what to look for is in Section 4 of the  Guide to Completing Annual Payroll Reporting .

Remember, you must submit an APR even if you are reporting zero (0) payroll. The penalty for late submission is 15% of your previous year's employer payroll assessment.

2019 ASSESSMENT RATES

Employers, your 2019 assessment rates have arrived and are now available to you on WSCC Connect. Visit WSCC Connect to conveniently access your individual rates, as well as view the subclass rates for all industries for the upcoming year. You can view the WSCC's current and historical rates by Class & Subclass and by Specific Industry.

Every year, the Governance Council works with an independent actuary to set the provisional average assessment rate and the individual rates for each subclass. This year, the average provisional assessment rate will be $2.10 per $100 assessable payroll. This provisional rate is the rate employers would pay if there was only one rate for all employers, and is the rate the WSCC uses as a starting point when setting individual subclass rates.

PERSONAL OPTIONAL COVERAGE DUE
DECEMBER 31, 2018

If you are a business owner, partner, registered director, or self-employed, you do not automatically receive WSCC coverage through your employment. To receive WSCC coverage, you need to sign up for Personal Optional Coverage, which provides you with the same benefits as other workers in case of workplace disease and injury.

You can apply for coverage for as little as one month and up to one full year. You need to renew your coverage each year, as your coverage does not extend into 2019. To ensure there is no break in coverage, please have your 2019 Personal Optional Coverage submitted to the WSCC by December 31, 2018.
