Learning Circle on talking together productively about public issues

April 24-30 is the National Week of Conversation, an opportunity for Americans to come together in a wide range of discussions about issues that impact the country, and the world.

During the week, online National Issues Forums are being convened on voting and policing, and we are collaborating with National Conference on Citizenship about innovative ways civic practitioners are bringing people with diverse views together in deliberative discussions of public issues that impact our lives.

Many Americans are concerned about the US election system although we don't always agree on the main problem or how best to fix it.

  • What should we do so people can vote with confidence and trust that the outcomes accurately represent the will of the people?
  • How should we safeguard and improve elections?
During the forum, participants will discuss perspectives and experiences as they weigh the pros and cons of various approaches to the issue and gain important insights from other participants in a civil and productive atmosphere.

People in communities across the country are considering policing practices that treat all people fairly while still enforcing the law.

  • What law enforcement functions do we most value and want to enhance? What aspects do we want to eliminate or rethink?
  • What roles should community members, law enforcement, officeholders, social services, educators, businesses, and others play as we work to enhance and improve policing?
During the forum, participants will discuss perspectives and experiences as they weigh the pros and cons of various approaches to the issue and gain important insights from other participants in a civil and productive atmosphere.

Talking Together Productively about Public Issues

Co-sponsored by National Conference on Citizenship and National Issues Forums Institute

Across the United States and throughout the world, innovative civic practitioners are bringing people with diverse views together in deliberative discussions of public issues that impact our lives. People are crossing traditional barriers to listen deeply, to think critically, and to create foundations for constructive and complementary public work. In this session, we'll examine these practices while sharing insights and resources from the National Issues Forums Institute.

Presenters:
Leslie Garvin, Executive Director, North Carolina Campus Compact
Betty Knighton, President, National Issues Forums Institute

About Deliberation in National Issues Forums
National Issues Forums issue guides are designed to stimulate public deliberation, which is a way of making decisions together that is different from discussion or debate. The purpose of deliberative forums is to inform collective action. As citizens, we have to make decisions together before we can act together, whether with other citizens or through legislative bodies. Acting together is essential for addressing problems that can't be solved by one group of people or one institution. These problems have more than one cause and therefore have to be met by a number of mutually reinforcing initiatives with broad public participation.

About the National Issues Forums Institute

The National Issues Forums Institute's mission is to promote the use of public deliberation in schools, colleges, civic organizations, and religious institutions in the United States. The institute's members are volunteers drawn from leaders in government, colleges and universities, libraries, civic organizations, the media, and medicine. For more information visit www.nifi.org.
