Dear friends of the gallery,
We are excited to offer programming for our summer exhibition, "Around the Block." This lecture series enables us to share with the community a sampling of the artists who are part of the creative culture that thrives in our region. Please join us Wednesday, July 12, at noon in room C118 to hear participating artists Robert Chapman, Christopher Reme, Lynn Hawkinson Smith, and Natalie Troyer discuss their work.
Chapman has an extensive history of artmaking and using various techniques, including making handmade paper, to create the portraits that are his current focus. Heroes and villains are the subjects of Reme's art, and he creates them using a digital format. The vast world of birds inspires Hawkinson Smith's graphite and colored pencil drawings. Troyer, who has a studio arts degree in Printmaking from Illinois State University, is interested in figurative work and building narratives. Each artist will speak for approximately ten minutes, with time for questions afterward. In addition, light refreshments will be in the gallery lounge following the event.
Please save the date for noon on Wednesday, July 19, when artists Sandra Hynds, Sara Jahn, Billie Theide, and Nathan Westerman speak. We will send information in the coming weeks on the second lecture featuring participating artists.
Serenity Stanton Orengo, writer for Smile Politely, Champaign-Urbana's online culture magazine, paid us a visit and wrote about the exhibition in her article "Art Around the Block Highlights the Diversity and Talent of the C-U Art Scene." You can read her insightful article here.
Please bear with us! You may see changes in our parking recommendations over the next several months as they resurface parking lots and construction near the gallery is underway. For the "Around the Block" artist talk on July 12, we recommend parking in the B7 parking lot and using the X2 entrance. Follow all signs to Room C118. We also recommend giving yourself additional time to reach your destination.
Stay cool,
Lisa Costello
