Research from AASHTO Region 1 States

Join us at 12pm EST on May 4 to learn about several projects from across AASHTO Region 1! This Lunch and Learn features five projects from Region 1 states: New Jersey, Maryland, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Maine. Presenters (mostly State DOT staff) will explain their projects and share how each state is applying the work in practice. Topics include asphalt pavement pothole repair, asphalt friction characterization, bridge repair and inspection technologies, and smart chloride mitigation systems. We are pleased to announce the selected 2026 VT AOT External Research Projects listed by project name below followed by the AOT Project Champion and their section, and the research team. These projects were identified in December 2025, matched to AOT technical Champions, and research problem statements were distributed to the 18 organizations (universities and consultants) on our Qualified Researcher List in January 2026. AOT Decisionmakers selected the projects in early April.
