Bl. John Henry Cardinal Newman

Human existence is marked by pleasure and pain.  By nature, we seek one and flee the other.  To find the meaning of such feelings and of our other affects, including spiritual ones, we must turn to the global meaning of life.

Are pleasure and pain intelligible? How do they bear on our interpersonal relationships?  How are they influenced by the differences between the sexes, between generations, and between cultures? How do our reactions to emotions form virtuous and vicious habits?  Is there a spiritual type of affectivity, as found in certain experiences of sorrow and joy?

More about the lecture...

The vermem conscientiae or "worm of conscience" is usually viewed as the bite of remorse.  Yet guilty knowledge is not inevitably associated with the painful emotion of remorse, and may manifest itself in a variety of other painful feelings and punishing impulses, the source of which may be mysterious to the sufferer.  Resolution has four elements, each of which depends on repentance; refusal to repent deepens sufferer's problem, sometimes in paradoxical ways.

Spotlight on the Series

Dr. W. Bradford Wilcox, Director of the National Marriage Project, presented on social justice's relationship with modern marriage and family structure. He argued that today's economic trends undermine marriage among the poor and working-class, and conservatives understand how important marriage is to the social, emotional, and economic welfare of men, women, and especially children. Both perspectives are vital to understanding what's happening to marriage in America.
