The workshop will be facilitated by Jessica Mostacedo, Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Texas at Arlington Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Cory Forbes, Ph.D., Fenton Wayne Robnett Professor of Science Education and Chair of the UTA Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and Emad Habib, Ph.D., Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

Food-Energy-Water Nexus: Using Hydroviz to Support Undergraduate Student Learning about Complex Socio-Hydrologic Issues Workshop

This workshop aims to introduce a course module and associated resources developed to engage undergraduate students in visualization of data grounded in the Food-Energy-Water-Nexus (FEW Nexus). Using an online visualization tool – Hydroviz – students engage in structured decision-making around a contemporary FEW-Nexus challenge with both natural and human dimensions. The workshop involves an introduction to the course module and Hydroviz, participation in a subset of module learning activities, and adaptation of the module to fit within a course that participants already teach. Participants are asked complete short questionnaires to contribute to workshop evaluation.

Participants who complete all workshop activities will receive a $250 stipend.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • identify the core components of the course module and Hydroviz, and
  • modify and be prepared to implement an adapted version of the module in their own courses to effectively promote their students’ learning.

This workshop is supported by grant funding from USDA-NIFA. There are two pre-requisites for participation in the workshop:

  • Being a faculty, post-doctoral researcher, or graduate student teaching undergraduate students
  • Teach an undergraduate course in which this module could be used to support student learning.
