On September 6, 2024, Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi, a recent graduate of the University of Washington, was shot and killed by an Israeli sniper just after joining Palestinians in the West Bank village of Beita in a weekly gathering to defend their land. Since that time Ayşenur's family has met with elected officials in D.C. and in Washington state calling for accountability and a thorough investigation into her death.
Recently, in the 2026 Washington state legislative session, which ended March 12, Senate Joint Memorial (SJM) 8014 called for the U.S. federal government to "open a transparent, thorough, and independent investigation into the killing of Eygi by Israeli military forces." Ayşenur's husband, Hamid, writes that SJM 8014 passed through the Senate with bipartisan support and was available for a House floor vote, but House Republicans blocked a vote on the Resolution. As soon as they learned about killing of Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi, Cindy and Craig Corrie issued a statement that said "The time for accountability is now." Unfortunately, SJM 8014 did not pass, and the federal government has not opened a thorough investigation, and the work for accountability and a thorough investigation continues. The Rachel Corrie Foundation remains committed to working alongside Ayşenur's family and partner organizations in demand justice and accountability for her murder.
_____
Last week the U.S. Senate voted on Joint Resolutions of Disapproval (JRDs) to limit some offensive weapons to Israel. Although S.J.Res 138, and S.J.Res 32 failed to pass, we thank Washington Senators Murray and Cantwell for voting yes to both, along with most Senate Democrats. S.J.Res 32 called for the limitation of Caterpillar bulldozers to Israel, including D-9 bulldozers that are used by Israel to demolish houses in Gaza and Lebanon, and the same kind of bulldozer that crushed Rachel Corrie to death. Before the votes on the JRDs Cindy Corrie wrote an article in The Nation titled "Let's Finally Do Something About the Bulldozer That Killed My Daughter".
