A Strong, Smart, and Bold School Year Is Underway!

Dear Friends,

This is a very exciting time at Girls Inc. of Long Island. As the newly appointed Executive Director, I am privileged to be part of such a dynamic organization whose mission is to inspire all girls to be Strong, Smart and Bold. We are thrilled to bring this message to girls across Nassau and Suffolk counties through innovative, research-based programs that empowers girls to be healthy, educated, and independent.

With the new school year underway, we are very excited to jump back in to our weekly programming! This year, we are in 12 schools in the following districts: Patchogue-Medford, William Floyd, Brentwood, Freeport, Central Islip, and our newest partner- the MLK Center in Long Beach! We look forward to everything this new school year has to offer and cannot wait to see our girls again!

We are excited to announce two upcoming events. One is our She Votes! program which is starting next week at 3 libraries across Long Island! She Votes! is an educational, nonpartisan Girls Inc. initiative that gives girls the skills and confidence to envision themselves as both future voters and future candidates. In addition to workshops, girls across our programs will participate in an online and paper ballot mock presidential election the week of October 31 (the week before the real U.S. election).

The other is "International Day of The Girl." This year, girls at Patchogue-Medford HS will be hosting a watch party to join the livestream conversation about improving girls' access to education worldwide.

Please visit our website for ways to get involved and reach out to me to learn more about sponsoring our programs.  Together we can make a difference in the lives of girls on Long Island and create the leaders of tomorrow today.

To our strong, smart, and bold future,

Janet Marcic
Executive Director

Looking Back: A Quick Recap!

This exciting and engaging week provided countless opportunities for girls to prepare for their future college and career paths! Each day began with a short lesson on practical skills, such as writing a resume, preparing for job interviews, creating a plan through vision boards, and much more. A panel of our interns even took the time to answer any questions the girls had about college - what to expect, how to prepare, etc. And the best part was that girls had the chance to visit a different job site each day!

On Monday, the girls visited the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County, where they toured the museum and talked to women working there on how to get involved in careers in Social Justice.

On Tuesday, the girls toured Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, the lab where the structure of DNA was discovered, and learned about careers in scientific research. In the afternoon the girls has the chance to talk to Stony Brook's Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) representatives about all of the possibilities there are for women in STEM.

After working on their resumes on Wednesday, the girls visited Northwell Health, where they learned about the healthcare system and how many diverse jobs there are in the field. The girls talked to lawyers, administrators, educators, and doctors about all the possibilities.

On Thursday, the girls visited National Grid headquarters in Melville, where they toured the building and met with engineers. The girls learned how the power grids on Long Island work, and how they are run and maintained by National Grid. Check out the video of their experience here!

Friday morning was spent at our sponsor for the week, Bank of America, where the girls learned about careers in different sectors of banking, such as mortgage banking, public relations, and philanthropic outreach. They also learned about managing finances and saving for the future.

Finally, the girls had a visit by three former Peace Corps volunteers who came to talk about their experiences as educators in Uganda, Paraguay, and Bulgaria. They discussed Peace Corps opportunities in health, agriculture, and community planning as well as common issues facing girls around the world.

Thank you to Bank of America for making this week possible!
