This Week's Schedule
Back to School Night: Sept 10
This is a great opportunity to get a first look at what is going on at school this year.

Hear from Mr. Cruess, meet other parents and visit with your children’s teachers. Light refreshments will be served. This is for parents only, so please leave the kiddos at home. Make plans now to attend!

Principal's Message
Our theme this year is a verse from 1 Peter that ties in with the Century of Service we celebrate this year with our Centennial, "Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms."

In the Gospel, Jesus calls us to serve others as He served, and that is our goal for this school year. We have committed ourselves as a school community to 100 Acts of Service.

Our faculty and student leadership have already been discussing ideas for outreach in the community. We'd love to have our parents take part as well. If there is a project you would like to suggest or lead, please send an email to scruess@saintbenedictschool.org .

Totus tuus Maria,

Sean Cruess, SBCS Principal
Mr. Cruess' Parent Reminders
Lunch:
Please remember to send in plasticware or a napkin if your child will need it for lunch. The school does not normally provide these items for students who bring their own lunch. It contributes to a lot of students being out of their seats during the lunch period.

Also, per the School Handbook, please do not send in glass containers of any kind. They are breakable, and we want to avoid any injury that could be caused by broken glass.

Car Line:
Now that we are a few weeks into the school year, car line seems to be running smoothly. Just remember to make a left turn into the alley from Cleveland and a right turn out of the alley onto Belmont.

If there are neighbors blocked in by our car line, please do everything possible to let them out. Please put down your cell phone while in car line. There are a lot of students and teachers in the alley, and we want to avoid any distractions, so everyone stays safe.

Thank you!
Because we feel accident insurance is very important for your child, we have secured a special school time accident policy...

Oktoberfest - Call for Volunteers
Oktoberfest is just 2 weeks away!! With over 50,000 guests, we really need everyone to help out and make Oktoberfest a great RVA event. We still have over 200 shifts to fill!

We count on every family to work at least one shift. Why? Because it helps keep everyone's tuition stable and it provides some financial aid for students who need it. So, please sign up today.

HERE   is the link to sign up.

We especially need parents to help in Tickets and IDs on Saturday evening! (Must be 21 to help in these locations.)

Note to parents:   Student volunteers are welcome to participate, but must be age 13 to work in Set up/Pack Up or the Children's Area and age 14 to work in Food Concessions or as Food Runners. *Student help only counts as service hours, not family volunteer hours.

Parish Religious Education for grades Kindergarten through 5th grades is being moved from Wednesday nights to Sunday mornings between the Masses from 9:45am-10:45am and will be located in the same rooms as last year at the parish school. Classes will begin on Sunday, October 6.
Edge Kickball Classic
Edge (middle schoolers) will meet for their 4th annual kickball classic on Friday, September 13 from 6-8pm. We’ll begin with dinner and snowcones before playing some good old kickball in the church parking lot.

Cost free. No permission form necessary. Please RSVP to  rhamrick@saintbendictparish.org  by Thursday Sept. 12 as we want to make sure we have enough food.
Edge Kick-Off
The Edge Kick-Off will be on Wednesday, October 2 from 6:30pm-8:00pm at St. Benedict Catholic Church. All 6-12 graders are welcome! Dinner will be served.   Edge, middle school youth ministry and religious education, will take place from 6:30pm-8:00pm on Wednesday nights in the St. Anselm Hall of the Parish School after the kickoff.
Registration Open!
Registration for Kindergarten through 5 th grade religious education, Edge middle school youth ministry and religious education, The Rule high school youth ministry and religious education, confirmation preparation, and First Penance and Communion is open! Please register online on the parish website.
First Penance/First Communion Sacramental Preparation
The deadline for signing up for First Penance/Communion (age of reason: 7, typically in 2nd grade) is October 6.

Registrations are online on the parish website and letters with schedules are on the parish website and side porch. Classes for First Penance/Communion will take place on select Sundays between the Masses from 9:45 to 10:45am.

Please remember that any child preparing to receive sacraments must be concurrently enrolled in religious education, which is different than sacramental preparation. Sacramental preparation for First Penance/Communion is required to occur through the parish, not the school.

Religious education, however, can take place either through a Catholic school, parish religious education program, or a homeschool program. In some cases, a young person will be receiving both religious education and taking sacramental preparation courses. School students have their religious education covered in class.
