Once the New Urban Agenda (NUA) is adopted in Quito at Habitat III this October, the real work of implementation begins. The NUA will guide urban development for the foreseeable future, and this session will explore how climate resilience policies and programs can be formulated within this framework.
By 2025, more than 70% of the world’s urban population will be living in Low Elevation Coastal Zones. With more people living in cities than in rural areas, the effects of climate change impact urban dwellers disproportionately; the already vulnerable urban poor are more likely to live in unsafe, or climate-stressed areas, and also are feeling the shocks of climate change the most acutely. Climate-resilient, inclusive urban development, therefore, requires an intentional commitment to help ensure that proposed interventions take into account the needs and vulnerabilities of all citizens.
This session will begin a dialogue to look at climate resilience in cities from the perspectives of policy-makers and practitioners; present recent research findings; share lessons learned from the implementation of existing resilience activities; and discuss approaches and strategies to build equity into the implementation of climate activities to carry forward in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda. The program will include brief remarks from speakers and a lively dialogue with the audience about incorporating equity into the implementation of the New Urban Agenda, specifically focused on climate resilience activities.
