Hello Friends,

We want to take a moment to reach out and thank all of you who have joined us for two of our recent events. On Thursday, May 7, hundreds of you from across the state joined the MS Black Women's Roundtable for our first TeleTownHall. This telephone-hosted event was provided to support a statewide discussion on COVID-19 and how it has magnified the need for Equal Pay for women in our state.

A few days later, we hosted our Pre-Mother's Day Comedy & Music Show featuring Comedian Rita Brent via Zoom. These events were a phenomenal success and we couldn't have done it without your unyielding support. Thanks to everyone who connected with us, shared details via social media and reached out to let us know how much you are enjoying our activities. We also want to thank our MS-BWR team for their tireless efforts to ensure everything went off without a hitch.

We hope you aren't tired yet, because the work in Mississippi continues at noon on Thursday, May 14, when we begin our virtual series of Coffee Cons. See below for details for this Sista Chat with a major purpose.

In the work,

Cassandra Welchlin

COFFEE CONS GO VIRTUAL

Caring for Your Cape: Quarantine Edition
Our Coffee Con series has traditionally been a way for us to connect with our network on a monthly basis in a physical location in Jackson. However, as we’ve adjusted to the current pandemic, we thought long and hard about the most helpful and useful information we can provide our network during this time. This summer’s ‘Coffee Series: Quarantine Addition’ will be a virtual space where we can continue in our tradition of connecting with the community and providing a space for authentic conversations on topics centering Black women in the state of Mississippi.

We’re starting our series with a Mental Health Workshop provided by Dr. Jerrilyn Dixon of Progressive Therapy. We know the impact COVID 19 has had on our community and we want to make sure everyone has the tools to support their mental health during this time. Join us as Dr. Dixon and her team discuss ways to support yourself and your family now and in the months ahead. As part of this event, you’ll receive a virtual handbook with tools you and your family can use to navigate this difficult time.

Mind, Body, and Hair!

Now, on to other PRESSing issues, OUR HAIR?! (We said we had you covered!) Our May 28th Coffee Con entitled’ Mind, Body, and Hair ’ will center on hair care in quarantine 2020. We know the salons are opening across the state but as salons open COVID numbers in the community increase. We’re hoping we can help you manage your tresses AT HOME. We will hear from hair care experts about how to care for your hair during the quarantine. It will also feature Candace Saulsberry, a yoga instructor who will teach us ways to stay moving and centered during this time.
