ST VINCENT DE PAUL THANKS YOU Due to a death in her family, this newly-housed woman has had difficulty meeting with volunteers from SVdP. CRS MINISTRY TEAM For over 50 years, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) has carried out the commitment of the US Bishops to provide life-saving assistance to our poor and vulnerable brothers and sisters overseas. Recently, federal funds for USAID were cut by Congress, effectively eliminating 55% of funding for CRS. In order to make up some of this loss, CRS chapters around the country are finding ways to step up. Here at St. James, we are hoping to form a CRS ministry team. Information, Patrick Barredo, pbarredo@stjames-cathedral.org or 206-382-4515.

REST IN PEACE Please pray for the repose of the souls of Guy McBride and Eleanor Roemer.

Opportunities to Give and Serve

The Cabrini Pledge On behalf of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, Bishop Mark Seitz of El Paso invites you, “… to join with us as keepers of hope, a hope that our Holy Father Pope Leo reminds us can be seen in the faithful witness of migrants and refugees. … With one voice, we proclaim, ‘every person, regardless of where they are born, is created in the image of God and has an inherent dignity that deserves respect.’” Named after Saint Francis Xavier Cabrini, who worshipped in St. James Cathedral and whose feast day is November 13, The Cabrini Pledge is both a reminder of our immigrant heritage and a call to deeper engagement with our faith in response to current events. Take the pledge, https://www.usccb.org/cabrinipledge.

IMMIGRANT ASSISTANCE: SUPPORTING LANGUAGE LEARNING How do we help learners go from word-level English to speaking sentences? How do we help someone with limited formal education learn how to read and write in a totally different language? How do we help improve listening comprehension skills to enable conversations about current events and other interests beyond the basics? These are some of the questions we grapple with on a regular basis.

One of the tips I give to tutors is to decrease TTT (Teacher Talking Time). This includes pausing for much longer than you normally would to create space for the student to think and speak. People need more time to absorb the information and formulate a response in another language. It requires patience and intentionality. While we don’t always have all the answers to the questions presented, we work together and learn alongside our students to help them achieve their goals. The greatest strength of our one-on-one tutoring program is that we can cater our instruction to the specific needs of each student. In that setting, bridges are built and a sense of community is gained over time.

St. James Immigrant Assistance celebrated our 50th anniversary this fall. The program that started out as a small ESL program in 1975 helping Vietnamese refugees, now offers three different services – Legal services, Refugee welcome, and Tutoring. Today, over 70 active volunteers support our immigrant neighbors through accompaniment and teaching English & Citizenship classes. Thank you so much for your continued support of this program, through volunteering, donations, and prayer. Information, Sayuko Setvik, ssetvik@stjames-cathedral.org or 206-382-4511.

St. James Immigrant Assistance: Identifying Community Resources With the increased focus on immigration and the rapid changes occurring in immigration law and policy, Immigrant Assistance is receiving a higher call volume from concerned community members. Callers are seeking up-to-date information and legal consultation to better understand how these changes could affect themselves or their loved ones. Though Immigrant Assistance services focus on specific forms of immigration relief, we prioritize taking the time to talk with all callers and understand their unique situations. If our services are unable to assist them directly, we explore and share resources in the community who might be able to address their needs. Callers often express their gratitude for having someone sincerely listen to their concerns and offer connections to move towards solutions. If you or someone you know needs help identifying resources in the community related to immigration or is interested in becoming a U.S. citizen, we can help. Information, Patrick Suhrbier psuhrbier@stjames-cathedral.org or Laura Murton lmurton@stjames-cathedral.org, 206-382-4511.
