Sign up for public Mass on Saturday, July 25
|
|
Join us for public Mass in the Cathedral, on Saturday, July 25, at 5:30pm. We have put many precautions in place to make sure the celebration is safe and comfortable.
This is not business as usual! The following are important important instructions for those who wish to take part in Mass:
- Registration is required, and registered persons will be checked in as they arrive. The Archdiocese of Seattle has mandated registration both to limit the numbers in attendance and to provide for contact tracing should we learn that anyone present has been exposed to Covid-19. We are required to keep records of all in attendance for 30 days, after which they will be destroyed.
- Masks/face coverings must be worn throughout the Mass except when receiving Holy Communion. You will need to bring your own as we cannot provide them at this time. For your safety and that of others, face masks are not optional.
- On arriving at the Cathedral, you will be greeted by staff who will check you in and show you your place for the Mass. You will NOT be able to choose your own place to sit! However, household groups will be seated together. We thank you for your patience and understanding.
You will notice a number of changes to the Mass. All these changes are designed to ensure our safety as we gather together for Mass:
- There will be no congregational singing because singing increases the risk of transmitting of the virus.
- The Sign of Peace will not be shared, and Communion will not be offered from the cup.
- Communion will be given only in the hand, not on the tongue.
- Because we are not able to gather or socialize following Mass, we ask that you depart quietly after the celebration.
Please remember that there is no obligation to attend Sunday Mass at this time. Particularly vulnerable persons are strongly encouraged to continue to shelter in place. Anyone who is experiencing any symptoms whatsoever, such as fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, MUST remain at home out of consideration for the health and well being of others.

Faith and Racial Equity: Exploring Power and Privilege
|
Mondays beginning August 3, 6:30pm-9:00pm, via ZOOM
The St. James Cathedral Life, Peace and Justice Commission invites you to participate in
Faith & Racial Equity: Exploring Power & Privilege
, an 8-week module that awakens groups to the economic systems, public policies, cultural norms, and hidden biases that empower some and oppress others. The series will introduce participants to a framework for understanding and recognizing racial disparities in power and privilege. You will also dive into specific issues, including affirmative action, the school-to-prison pipeline, the criminal justice system, and powerful biases in media representation.
Please note that
Faith and Racial Equity
is not for the faint of heart! This series is for those willing to wrestle with hard questions and take an honest look at their own attitudes, assumptions, and choices. However, through spiritual grounding and community-building, participants find support and belonging throughout their journey to personal transformation and social action.
This series consists of eight 2½-hour Zoom sessions which include prayer, dialogue, active listening, and relationship-building. There will also be a retreat to build community and Scriptural grounding. Reading materials cost approximately $40. Scholarships available.

Grief Support Group | begins August 4
|
Are you grieving the death of someone close to you? Grief and loss can have a significant impact on our lives long after the death of the person we love. The grieving process has no timeline and is unique to each individual, but meeting with others who are going through a similar experience can provide support and help us cope.
You are invited to join this 8-week grief support group facilitated by St. James Cathedral Staff Nancy Granger and Rosanne Michaels.
The group will gather via Zoom on eight Tuesdays, August 4 through September 22, 6:30pm-8:00pm.

Book Group:
Seattle in Black and White
Join the discussion on August 11

"Seattle needs this book. Part memoir, part history, it tells the remarkable story of the activists who pierced the veil of complacency in the early 1960s and forced the city to begin dismantling its systems of segregation."
- James N. Gregory, author of
The Southern Diaspora: How the Great Migrations of Black and White Southerners Transformed America
The July reading recommendation,
Seattle in Black and White
by Joan Singler and others, will be the focus of a virtual book discussion on Tuesday, August 11, 7pm-8:30pm via Zoom. Sr. Judy Ryan will host this in-depth examination of Seattle's own racialized history. This is a story that must be continually told.
Copies (ebook, paperback, or hardcover) can be ordered through
Amazon. Or
through your local independent bookseller.

to start taking the 2020 Census.
School lunches. Plans for highways. Support for firefighters and families in need. Census results affect your community every day.
The results of the 2020 Census will help determine how hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funding flow into communities every year for the next decade. That funding shapes many different aspects of every community, no matter the size, no matter the location.
- It’s Quick and Easy. The 2020 Census takes just a few moments to complete.
- It’s Not Too Late. You can still complete the census today.
- It’s Safe and Secure. The U.S. Census Bureau keeps you answers safe and confidential.
The 2020 Census count impacts the federal funds that communities receive each year for programs and services that are critical for schools, students, and younger children, such as:
- Special education, Head Start, after-school programs, and classroom technology.
- Food assistance, including free and reduced-price school lunches.
- Maternal and child health programs.
