*Call to Worship
Liturgist: In those days after Jesus rose from the dead, in those days when no one really knew what was going on or what was going to happen –
People: In those days God exhaled the Holy Spirit.
Liturgist: And when the disciples pushed out their fear
People: And as dancing flames heralded the arrival of something new
Liturgist: And as the birth cry was the cries of many languages, all understood –
People: In those days, the church was born, out of fear and fire,
Liturgist: With joy and awe.
People: The church was born.
Liturgist: Our church.
People: God’s church.
Liturgist: Let us worship God.

*Opening Prayer
Holy God, Holy Breath, Wind, Flame, Spirit: Set our hearts of fire. Burn off all that is dry and lifeless, And grow us anew. Let your Spirit dance within our spirits, uprooting us when we have been unmoved. And refreshing all that is stale in our lives. Breathe on us your peace that we will share that peace with all we meet. And hear the silent prayers of our hearts. In Christ’s Name. Amen.

Lead Me, Lord”
UMH #473
Lead me, Lord, lead me in thy righteousness;
make thy way plain before my face.
For it is thou, Lord, thou, Lord only,
that makest me dwell in safety.

Scripture Readings

John 16:7-15
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate[a] will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about[b] sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; 11 about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. 12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Acts 2:12-17
12 All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.” 14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15 Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. 16 No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 17 ‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.

 We Respond

*Offertory Prayer
Holy God, thank you for sending your Spirit, the Spirit of the risen Christ, from heaven. Help us to be like the early disciples, praying patiently as we wait for your guidance and power. Fill our hearts and minds with your gifts of faith, hope, and love. May our conversations with people of every language and culture around us witness to your grace and mercy. We dedicate ourselves and our offerings to your good purposes in the world through our church’s mission by the power of your Spirit. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
